it all happened on a rainy day when he was jogging to school. as you crossed paths with him, his drenched orange hair was the first thing that caught your eye. his big, round and hazel eyes tinted with specks of orange sparked an interest in you.
days passed and you started to greet him with a small smile whenever he crossed paths with you, then followed by a small wave, then a "good morning" to each other.
weeks passed now, and you started to converse more with him. he would always get off his bike and talk to you and walk to school with you since you attend karasuno too.
sometimes when it's raining, hinata would offer you a ride home. at first it was a little awkward, but after a few conversations and rides you decided that you were getting comfortable with the outgoing lad.
it had officially been four months since you've seen that energetic boy. he never failed to plaster a smile on your face and speed up the beating of your heart. and one night while you were lying in bed you realized that you actually are falling for him.
you started debating whether should you confess or not, but you were scared that he would reject you and things would turn out awkward, so you chose to hide your feelings and be silent about it.
until one day, you didn't see him. it was just another morning where the sky would turn purplish mixed with tints of pastel colors. you didn't see that familiar bicycle riding towards you, nor the familiar mob of orange hair.
days passed and you felt your heart sank. you missed that cheery voice and that glowing eyes whenever you talked to him. you would wait for him along the sidewalk for a few minutes and when you finally gave up, you walked to school with a sulk.
it was until lunch break when you overheard some students from hinata's class that he was hospitalized. your heart froze at their conversation and you headed to their homeroom teacher to ask about your dear friend.
"sensei!" you called, your voice shaking and a look of urgency washed over your face. the teachers in the room looked up from their work and you headed to hinata's teacher.
"i heard that hinata shoyō is hospitalized, is that true? can you tell me which hospital he is in?"
"yes, he is in fact hospitalized from an accident, sadly. and he is in the hospital just a few hundred meters away from our school."
you bowed and left, and the teachers went back doing their work while you brisk walked towards your destined location.
-
there you stood, facing the saddening white doors of the operation room. apparently hinata's condition worsened and they had to operate on a blood clot in his head.
it was a big operation and you could see some of his team mates waiting anxiously outside of the room. his parents were there too, and you just stared at the doors, hoping that it would open up soon.
hours passed, and you found yourself slowly dozing off when the sounds of doctors speaking woke you up.
"how is he?"
"the operation is a success, but there might be side effects such as headaches, dizziness or even amnesia."
'amnesia huh' you thought to yourself. you weren't ready for this, for hinata to forget you is the last thing you wanted.
as everyone took turns to visit him, you sat outside quietly and waited to go in. you wanted to be the last person to go in, so when it was finally your turn, you smiled to yourself and headed in.
"hi hinata, how are you?" you asked while taking a seat beside his bed. he blinked weakly and sat up from the bed, looking at you with curious eyes.
"hinata?"
"i'm sorry but, who are you?"
that sentence pierced through your heart like a sharp blade. you felt your smile fall as you sat there in awkward silence with him.
"you... don't remember me?" you asked, your lips trembling and eyes watering.
"o-oi, don't cry," he panicked as he tried to comfort you. instead of staying and making a fool out of yourself, you chose to walk out and leave him alone. and there he sat on the bed, confused at what just happened.
-
for the next few hours, hinata didn't sleep at all. he simply stared up at the plain ceiling and thought of you. he had the familiar feeling in his mind when he saw your face, but he just could not remember who are you.
it felt like ages ago when he met you though it was only a few days he last saw you. he stopped thinking about it when his head pounded and he clutched it in pain. deciding to shove the disturbing thought behind his mind, he went to sleep and left everything to tomorrow morning.
-
after a week, hinata was discharged from the hospital. he still continued cycling to school, but one thing that wasn't the same was that he didn't even talk to you anymore. sure he'd look at you, more like glance, but that's all. you would sigh to yourself before trailing behind him.
days after, it was raining. you had forgotten your umbrella and you had to shelter yourself with your bag. surprisingly a ring was heard and a bicycle dismounted beside you.
"hop on, i'll cycle the both of us to school in no time!" the orange haired boy grinned. you blinked at him in surprise but hopped on anyway. he took both of your hands and wrapped it around his waist before he started to paddle.
your heart races and you could feel tears threatening to fall. you realized how much you missed him and that you felt empty without this ball of sunshine.
"hinata." he hummed in response.
"do you remember me? can you try to? please?"
he seemed to tense and his speed slowed down. he remained silent and it was painful to endure that you had to break it.
when the both of you reached school, he chained his bicycle to the fence and began to walk off without saying a word.
by then you had already had ahold of his forearm and stopped him in his tracks. "don't walk into my life just to walk out like that, i don't deserve this," you hissed.
he turned around to look at you, a flash of guilt dulling his eyes. "truth to be told, i remember you. i guess you should know why i'm putting up an act, you deserve to know," he started off.
"when i took the initiative to talk to you every morning, i found myself falling for you. but then during lunch i always see you with this guy and it really makes me jealous, so jealous that it hurts. and then i decided to forget you that evening. i was so deep in my thoughts that i didn't see a truck coming towards me and that's when the accident happened."
you found yourself shaking and he looked down on the ground. "sorry," you whispered, repeatedly.
he awkwardly but cutely shifted towards you and wrapped him arms around your smaller frame. you felt his body pressing against yours as the both of you stood in the rain.
at that moment, you felt love for the first time.
