Kres' Story
Kes and Kres hid behind a wall as they heard their mother shriek, "Stop interfering with my life! Ever since we've had those two kids you've been like that! Being that inconsiderate asshole you are now! And what do you think? They'll carry on your family name? For gods' sake, they're gay, you get that? Gay! I've been teaching them how to act around a girl, but instead they'd acted as if they are good old boyfriends and treat each other even closer than the normal kind of relationship between brothers! What's worse, you're shielding them instead of agreeing with me!"
As their father's voice shouted back at their mother, they heard "Damn, they're our kids! Instead of wishing they're not gay, you should be loving them for who they are! And I love them. But now, I don't think you'll ever love them again unless they get themselves a girlfriend or a wife. True?"
"I HATE THEM! I HATE THEM WITH ALL MY LIFE! I REGRET EVER HAVING THEM WITH YOU! ONE THING'S FOR SURE, I'M NEVER COMING BACK AGAIN! I'LL LET YOU HAVE YOUR PRECIOUS SONS AND LET YOU REALIZE ONE DAY THAT YOU HAVE MADE A BAD DECISION BY ACCEPTING THEM AS THEY ARE. YOU WILL REGRET!"
And then Kres knew it was over. The fight. Their mother was not going to return anymore. This was the one and only time their parents had quarreled so seriously. Other times their mother would only threaten not to come back anymore, and ended coming back after all, but he could hear the seriousness in his mother's tone. She. Was. Never. Coming. Back. Ever. Again.
Kres felt a sense of dread in his chest. Who was going to cook their meals for them? Who would look after them when their father was not at home? He didn't want to have a nanny to look after them. He had read stories which had a nanny character inside, and in nine out of ten of those stories, the nannies were portrayed as bad people. Worst of all, he didn't want to have a stepmother. That was the most hardcore cruel stepmothers. Shaking his head a little, he felt that he had read too much fairy tales, especially Cinderella.
'Not all stepmothers are like this,' he scolded himself. He was brought back to the reality when his older twin brother Kes tugged on his sleeve.
"Mummy is gone," Kes whispered to him. "Daddy's coming to us."
True enough, their father came into their view seconds later. Their father carried them both up on both sides of his arms, pressing a kiss to both their foreheads. "I'm so sorry, babies. I tried to keep your mother, but..." Tears streaked down his face.
Kres felt saddened by the fact that his father had cried right in front of them. Their mother's leaving must have hurt him a lot to make him cry. Kres had never seen his father cry in all his short child's life, and to seeing his father cry, he thought that maybe things were worse than how he had assumed. Never again will they have a mother, and never again would she come back, and his father was crying...about something that Kres felt included them, and a part of him hoped that nothing even worse would happen.
About two weeks later, Kes and Kres were at home watching the television together on the couch after completing their required assignments when they heard keys turn in the doorknob and prepared to welcome their father home when they heard another voice outside. A female one. But it wasn't their mother's voice. Kres began to feel worried.
Who had his father brought home? He didn't want a stepmother!
As his father stumbled into their house, a woman followed along behind him with the same drunk-looking footsteps. Their father and the woman did not see them gaping at them from the living room, and Kes and Kres watched as their father did inappropriate things to the woman, horrified to be seeing their father do those things to that woman, who was not their mother, and it surprised the hell out of them when the woman responded to their father.
