What Makes A Poem?

by PJ Perry

A good poem doesn't need to have a good rhyme

It will let you sprout roses and spit bullets at the same time.

It can tickle your tummy and touch your heart,

It can make the tears start.

It can take you to far away places,

Make you imagine faces

You have never seen before.

It can show war in a different way.

You can see the blood, drown in the flood

Or see the kids at play.

It captures a moment like a word photograph,

It captures a laugh, it captures sorrow,

It enslaves yesterday, today and tomorrow.

It says more in a verse than a chapter in a book.

It says more with a word than if you were to look.

It captures essence and soul.

Words gently roll

Out of the tongue and into the ear.

It can take you by surprise what you hear.

It doesn't have to make sense

Just touch your senses.

But what really makes a poem is a good poet

And you know it!
