Chapter 61

Mitch's POV

I even had to alight on the cab to go after that thing. At first, he was not sold out with my suggestion because he's worried. I told him I'm going to apply my Karate skills, just in case it will be needed.

While I was on my way, I saw a familiar face. He's hiding behind a tree. I tiptoed towards his direction.

"Nick, anong ginagawa mo diyan?" I grimaced. It's just weird to see him like this. It's as though he is about to assassinate someone from afar. Sniper, it is. But, come on, he's a good guy. He won't do that.

"I thought you already went home," naguguluhang aniya.

"May nakalimutan lang ako. Nakakainis nga, eh. Nandoon kasi sa pouch 'yung phone at I.D ko. Mahirap na mang-gangster ng guwardya bukas," I told him a matter-of-factly.

"Oh," was all he said. Then, he became utterly quiet. He sat down at the roots and gazed away. Am I boring?

I sighed and rolled my eyes. I sat beside him and followed where his stares are leading him.

"Ano ba kasi 'yang tinitignan mo. Ang weird mo kasi . . ."

Bakit? Hindi pwede. Imposible. Paanong? Naguguluhan ako. Hindi naman dapat ganito. He's been away. Why did he come back just now? He could have been here days earlier. I feel bad for Nick. I can feel pain in his chest. He might not be vocal about it, but I know that deep inside, he's shattered.

When I snapped back, I looked at him and sympathized with his current situation. I faked a smile-mentally communicating to him how sorry I am. I guess he got what I was trying to tell him, that's why he smiled back. He gave his most painful and fakest smile ever.

"Alam mo ba 'to?" I asked him. I know it was too much of me being rude, but I need to hear it from him.

"Yes." Tumawa siya nang mapakla. He's trying so hard to hide the pain. Guys, really. But he can't act like a strong man now. There were pieces of him everywhere. I want to help him pick those, but knowing this guy, he's enjoying the pain.

"Nick, are you stupid? Bakit mo 'to ginagawa? Masokista ka ba?" galit na asik ko. Naiinis ako na nakikita ko siyang ganito. He's my friend, anyway. I want to protect him from the pain.

"Baka nga," malamig na sagot niya. "Guess it's true, love really hurts."

"Indeed," I replied. I can't console him enough. We both know that Jillian loves Cyrus. We both know that he is the only one she's been praying for. And I can't lie about that. It's Cyrus. It had always been him.

He pushed his back against the trunk and smiled bitterly. "Sa palagay mo ba magiging masaya na siya ngayon? I mean, life real happy?" he asked.

"Who knows? One person's happiness is really unpredictable. Most of the times, it depends on the situation you're in." We, as humans, set our own standard of happiness. That's why we easily get rejected when life suddenly happens in a manner which completely contradicts our idea of how it should be.
