Third Person POV

Foei tried not to let his nervousness show as he joined Chanagun, or Chani as he preferred to call him, at his table.

Foei badly wanted to make Chani his friend. For some reason the soft but still masculine features quickly attracted Foei to Chani.

"So what are your plans when this cruise is over?" Foei asked Chani, after waiting for Chani to set down his glass after taking a sip from it.

Chani made a face.

"Back to work," he replied.

"Same here actually," Foei said with a chuckle.

There was a brief awkward silence as both guys continued to eat their lunch and sipped their drinks.

Foei wanted to ask a certain question very badly but he hesitated. He asked himself if he was willing to risk getting the cold shoulder from Chani.

Foei continued to sip his drink, his heart pounding like crazy because he knew he was going to ask the question anyway.

Foei watched as Chani took the last forkful of his lunch and drank the last bit of his drink.

Then Foei knew that Chani would excuse himself to leave.

This is it, Foei thought, it's now or never.

"So ... " Foei tried to make his voice sound calm and casual, "so, is there a girlfriend or wife that you're going back to after this cruise?"

Foei did not realize that Chani had not yet swallowed the last bit of his drink.

Chani started to cough, pounding on his chest to relieve it.

Foei quickly stood up and started tapping on Chani's back.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," said Foei as he continued to tap on Chani's back, "I didn't mean to ask a very personal question."

When Chani stopped coughing, he managed to say, "It's okay, it's just that I was not expecting the question."

Foei watched as Chani wiped his mouth with the table napkin.

Foei waited. Was Chani going to answer his question or was he going to ignore it.

After an agonizing minute Chani finally spoke up.

"I'm not sure," Chani replied with a sad smile.

"What do you mean you're not sure?" Foei's curiosity got triggered.

Chani took a deep breath before he spoke again.

"Well ... last time I heard about her, she was seen around town with another guy. She did not give me the courtesy of formally breaking up with me. I do not know whether to stop considering her as my girlfriend or to go back to her and try to get back together with her."

"Do you still love her?" Foei knew that it was a very personal question and that Chani probably hated being asked personal questions, but Foei could not help himself. He just needed to know.

Foei noticed Chani's eyes starting to glisten.

Suddenly Chani stood up.

"Please excuse me," Chani said, his voice quivering a little.

Foei quickly followed him out of the dining hall.

He touched Chani's shoulder.

"Hey, I'm sorry for asking you very intrusive questions," he said, walking quickly to keep in stride with Chani, "I promise not to ask any more questions if you will allow me to stay in your company for the rest of the day."

"I had nothing much in mind," Chani confessed.

"There's a live band that's scheduled to perform at the bar at three o'clock," Foei informed him, "would you like to check it out with me?"

"Won't hurt, I guess," Chani said with a shrug of his shoulders.

"Let's hang out in the open deck while waiting for the performance to start," Foei suggested, "if we go there now, we will be expected to order drinks and I'm not much of a drinker."

"Same here," said Chani.

Chani followed Foei as Foei made his way to the open deck.

There were other people there, some were leaning against the railing while others were sitting on benches listening to music using the earpieces of their phones. Others were merely sitting side by side chatting, while the rest were just strolling up and down, probably to digest their lunch.

Foei walked straight toward the railing. Again Chani followed him there.

Chani stared out into the ocean. Foei noticed that he had a sad and thoughtful expression on his face.

"She's not worth it," the words came unbidden from Foei's lips.

Chani turned sharply towards him.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," Foei was full of contrition, "I have this bad habit of saying out loud the first thing that enters my mind."

Chani looked at Foei long and hard.

"Actually," he said, "I do believe you're right."

It was Foei's turn to look at Chani wide eyed.

Without thinking, Foei grabbed Chani by the shoulder and pulled him close sideways.

"You won't regret your decision," Foei said almost in a whisper because he started to feel really emotional.

They stayed in that position, looking out into the ocean, Foei's arm resting lightly across Chani's shoulder.

After a while, Chani looked at his watch.

"It's almost three o'clock," he announced.

"Let's go then," said Foei, taking him by the hand.

Together they made their way to the bar.

The strains of live music could be heard even before they were inside the bar.

"What would you like to drink?" Foei asked Chani, "my treat," he added.

"Something mild," Chani replied, "some vodka-free drink."

"Sure," Foei said, approaching the bartender.

In the meantime, Chani looked around for a free table. He found one farthest from the stage where the live band was playing.

When he saw Foei looking around with two drinks in both hands, Chani raised his hand to let Foei know where he was.

Foei quickly made his way towards him.

"Do you like this kind of music?" Foei asked Chani as he handed Chani his drink.

"I'm just a casual listener of reggae music," Chani replied, "I'm more into pop and ballads."

"I'm eclectic," Foei informed him, "as long as the beat is good and the melody is fine, I will listen to any genre."

Suddenly the music turned into a slow soulful kind and some clients started drifting to the open space right across the stage and started dancing to the slow music.

Foei turned to Chani.

Chani laughed, "Bro, nahhh"

Foei laughed along with him but in reality Foei was indeed thinking of holding Chani close in his arms on the dance floor and swaying to the soft music.
