Third Person POV

By early evening, Chao's smile had all but evaporated from his face. The call from Earth that he was expecting never came. He called himself a presumptuous idiot for thinking that Earth would even consider calling him.

"Chao, you've been toying with your dinner for some time now," the ship's captain who was sitting opposite Chao in the employees' lounge waved his hand in front of Chao's face, "I don't think it's because White's culinary skills are not up to par for you. There's got to be another reason. Spit it out."

Chao grabbed a napkin to put it against his mouth.

"I didn't mean it literally," said the captain, laughing out loud.

"It's not that," Chao replied, "I can't swallow my food. I think I need a stiff drink."

As Chao stood up, the captain grabbed his wrist.

"Hey, I'm not gonna stop you from taking in any alcohol but please don't get drunk. Don't even get buzzed. We're expecting a storm to hit tonight. I have sent out a memo to all employees this morning to be on the alert. Everyone of us have to be ready to help all passengers in case of any disaster."

"Just a shot of whiskey, that's all I need," Chao mumbled as he made his way to the beverage counter.

Chao did not disclose to the captain that he had waited all day and all evening for someone to give him a call, but the call never came. Chao was someone who couldn't take disappointment too well.

He went behind the counter and took out a bottle of Scotch whiskey. He did not hear the captain walk up behind him. The captain had already taken out a shot glass for him and was handing it to him.

Chao smiled his thanks. The captain was making sure that he was not drinking any more than one shot.

Chao bid the captain a good night after downing the whiskey. He wasn't planning to go back to his quarters yet. He stepped out of the staff lounge and made his way to the open deck.

He took out his phone to check the time on the screen. It was only half past seven. Too early to hit the sack anyway.

He was about to turn the knob on the door leading to the open deck when he realized he couldn't step out. It was pouring like crazy.

He decided to go to his office and stream some movies from his computer. He made his way to the foyer and pressed the service button for an elevator to take him to his office.

He was still in the foyer waiting for the elevator when two young men came rushing in from the open deck on the opposite side of the foyer. They were both soaking wet. They actually looked like two drowning rats but they didn't look miserable at all. On the contrary they were both grinning. They were grinning like a pair of cats who had just swallowed a canary.

Chao tried to strike up a conversation.

"You must have been too focused on your activities in the open deck that you had not realized that the rain had come down on you," he said, taking note of the drenched shirts of both guys.

"He was holding ... " one of them was starting to say, but the other guy clapped his hand against his mouth.

"The rain came down so suddenly in a huge downpour," the other guy explained.

"Well you better dry yourselves fast before you catch a cold," Chao said and at that moment the elevator doors opened and the three of them walked inside.

"What deck are you headed for?" Chao asked the two guys, his finger hovering over the set of numbers.

"Third please," one of the guys replied.

"Sure," Chao said, pressing on the number three, after which he pressed on the number seven where his office was located.

Chao did not fail to notice that the other guy was holding his companion very close to his side, perhaps to warm him because he seemed to be shivering.

When the elevator doors opened on deck number three, both guys stepped out.

"Good night," said Chao.

"Good night, sir," the other two called back as they hurriedly made their way to wherever they were going.

Chao started to feel lonely again. He resigned himself to the fact that the guy Earth to whom he had handed his business card was not interested in him at all.

Chao scolded himself for even hoping that he would get a call from Earth. Earth might be a big fellow but he was obviously much younger than him. They probably wouldn't have any common topic of interest to talk about.

Chao stepped out of the elevator when it stopped on Deck Seven. He slowly walked over to where his office was, unlocked the door and stepped inside.

He went behind his desk and sat down on his swivel chair. He pulled his laptop closer to him and opened it.

He was about to type in his password when his phone started to ring. The ringtone was generic so the call wasn't from anyone that he knew.

He pulled his phone out of his pocket. The screen was showing an unknown number. Should he take the call? He was used to getting calls from scammers and telemarketers. He was about to let the call go to his voicemail when he remembered... Earth!

Was it possible? He quickly swiped his screen.

"Hello," Chao's voice sounded tentative.

There was a brief hesitation on the other end.

And then, "Hi, this is Earth, the guy you met in the elevator earlier."

Chao's heart jumped to his throat. He could not speak at once.

"Ye...yes, hi, Earth, how are you?"

"I'm doing great, how about you?"

"Well, to be honest, I was feeling kind of grumpy all day, but now I'm feeling so much better," said Chao, grinning from ear to ear.

A brief pause, and then Chao asked, "Have you had dinner yet?"

"An hour ago," Earth replied.

"Where are you right now?" asked Chao.

"Outside the elevator on Deck Seven."

Chao's heart rate spiked to a dangerously high level.

"You're kidding me right?" he said, his voice coming out almost in a whisper.

"I'm actually making my way to your office."

That was the last thing that Chao heard from Earth.

Suddenly there was a deafening crash, and a lurching movement of the ship that sent Chao hurtling across his office. Not too long after, his office was flooded with sea water.
