“Amy, come on. You need to eat.” Shawn pleaded. Since the day I saw the tickets I felt overwhelmed. Suddenly life wasn’t worth living – it all became so real. It reminded me of how much I lost that day. I stopped eating, I barely talked. I had heard the doctors talk about a feeding tube. But I still couldn’t bring myself to care.
“It was for me and her.” I muttered under my breath. I’ve been losing it. I really have. I’m slowly going insane.
“She would want you to enjoy it. She definitely wouldn’t want this Amy.” He sighed, and he was right. He had never met her, yet still, he was more able than me to do what she wants. My Mum was the most stubborn and strong person in the world, she would not give up or give in. She would want me to fight through this. With a sigh I grabbed a chip. In an effort to make me eat Shawn had gone to McDonalds. The man sure does know what to buy, I do love a McDonalds’.
“Sorry.” I sighed, eating it. Damn, it was good. I was pretty hungry.
“No sorry’s.” The police had arrested the men responsible apparently, it had been 4 days since I was reunited with the real wold and given the tickets, and they were arrested the day before. There was enough evidence to put them away for ‘life’ which is, of course, not life. I know soon they’ll talk about finding me somewhere to live, it’s not like I can stay in the hospital for life. I can’t really stay on my own, but I have nowhere else to go. For now, I’ll just have to do what I can. Shawn is right, I need to think about what my family would want for me.
“Would you take me?” I ask quietly. He knew what I meant immediately, a small smile flashed across his face.
“Don’t you think you should ask Susan?” He countered.
“Shawn, you have been looking out for me through this, practically my best friend and I owe you for the laptop. You are an angel, let me pay you back.”
“All right then.” He laughed. “We’ll have to check with the doctors too.” We talked plans for the show. It was in a month. Shawn said he would call the venue, get something in place considering our circumstances. I was hoping I would be able to walk by then, although they have only recently begun removing wires. So it isn’t too likely. But I was excited. Maybe too excited. Whenever I get happy or excited I feel bad, like I shouldn’t be happy, because my family can’t be. But I tried, and for the first time I was pretty damn close to happiness.
“Doctor Murphy said its fine. That as long as you continue to get better, he doesn’t see a problem.” Shawn announced as he entered the room, I was sat with Susan and Kim.
“Yay!” I cheered, smiling properly.
“Alright guys, let me just run some checks.” He told my friends, writing things down on his pad and pressing buttons on the machines surrounding me.
“Can’t they wait Shawn.” I complained.
“Afraid not. Doctors are keeping an even closer eye on you with the concert coming up.”
“It’s like a month away.”
“Doctors.” Shawn sang as he left the room.
“He is FIT!” Susan laughed. Kim nodded in agreement.
“He is an absolute sweetheart.” I told them, Susan just smiled.
“You seem better.” She informed me.
“I feel better, I know they aren’t coming back. And it still hurts, sometimes I’ll hear or see something that reminds me of them too much. But, I haven’t had a breakdown in a while. The therapist seems impressed with my improvements, she said it’s because I have something to look forward too.”
“The keep looking forward.” Kim smiled. “When are you getting out?” She asked.
“It’s not a prison sentence Kim.” I giggled. “But they don’t know, I’m still attached to machines and going through physio and therapy. Then we are going to talk about my ‘options’.” Honestly, I was scared. I couldn’t stay on my own, the police had made that clear. But I had no one else to live with. I really wanted to stay here, so I could go to the same school and keep with my friends. Kim and Susan just nodded, they don’t know about everything yet. A pile of gifts had grown at the bottom of my bed. It was starting to get annoying really, but I said thank you and looked grateful. Susan kept on eyeing them all.
“Are you ever going to open them?” She asked.
“Probably.” Not. What do you buy someone who’s whole family died in front of them and is currently tuck in hospital recovering herself? Something they don’t want. That’s for sure.
“Well, we have to go.” Kim said sadly. “We have homework, oh and apparently they are sending work over for you to do.” I sighed, things were starting to return to normal. Or as normal as they could be.
“Great. I’ll see you guys around.” I called as they walked out. Shawn wandered in about 10 minutes later, clicking his pen. “What’s up?”
“Nothing. I’m just bored.” He moaned.
“Try being stuck in a bed.” I pointed out.
“Yeah, I guess you have a point.” He admitted.
“I always have a point.” I smiled, things had been getting better. Very slowly, but it was happening. “Want to chill out and listen to music?” I asked.
“Why not.” He laughed, we had been listening to The Script a lot recently, and trying to make sure he knows all the words. It’s been fun, it gives me something to smile about, something to distract me. Having something to look forward to, is helping me so much, and giving me the push to do more. I just hope that after the concert I can still push myself to do more. And have something to look forward to.
