I woke up in Dan’s arms, on the sofa in the flat. He smiled down at me as I slowly stretched out, sitting up to see better.

“You ok?” Dan asked quietly.

“Yep, sorry about earlier. I was stupid to walk out on you guys and to not have my phone. I was just confused about what I did wrong.” Dan’s face softened, almost looking guilty.

“Babe, you didn’t do anything wrong. Look, my Ma isn’t well. I’m stressed is all. I am flying back to Ireland tomorrow morning.” He looked away, tears already forming in his eyes.

“Dan, let me come with you. You can’t go alone.” I pleaded, holding his hand and giving him a comforting squeeze.

“You know you can’t, you have exams.” He sighed, the first tear slowly falling down his face. As inappropriate as this may be, he is even perfect when he cries. (Little Maroon 5 there) Anyway, issue at hand.

“I can retake exams Danny, you shouldn’t worry about it. I can sit them later on. It doesn’t really matter. Let me handle that, I refuse to let you go alone. You need someone with you.” I insisted, he looked at me crying silently.

“I just can’t lose her.” Then the sobbing, poor Dan. I held him close, letting him cry.

“She will be fine, you O’Donoghues are fighters.” I assured him after he had calmed down a bit.

“I need to be there, after my Dad I. I can’t not be there. I have to be there for her and for everyone else.”

“I know baby.” I kissed the top of his head. “Why don’t you go and start to pack some bags?” I suggested, he nodded and walked to the bedroom. Talk about guilty. I should have recognised something was up, I shouldn’t have assumed it was me and just asked him. Maybe then all of this would have been avoided. Obviously he was telling me about this when he was in the bathroom, which explains why he was upset I wasn’t there because it isn’t an easy topic to discuss.

“Shall I pack some clothes for you?” Dan asked, his head appearing in the door way.

“Unless I’m going naked.” I laughed, it made Dan smile, even if it was only a little one.

“That’s a no then.” He chuckled, not expecting a cushion to hit him in the face.

“Daniel!” I smiled, trying to sound serious but completely failing. I ended up laughing so hard that I fell off the sofa, which made Dan laugh. Next thing we know there are three pairs of feet in front of us.

“What the hell is up with you guys?” Mark asked, shooting us both fairly concerned glances.

“She fell of the couch.” Dan gasped between laughs. Glen was struggling to not laugh, I could see it on his face, he was trying to look serious like Mark.

“And, and, he got hit in the face with a cushion.” I managed to say. Dan, who had calmed down a little, burst out laughing again. And that laugh makes me laugh. Yeah, it was a viscous circle. After a good 15 minutes, the boys separated us until we had stopped laughing. “My face hurts so much.” I groaned.

“I have just burnt so many calories.” Dan agreed.

“Urgh, don’t remind me laughing is an exercise. I’ll have to stop doing it.” I sighed, letting my head fall back on to the sofa. “Oh, and I’m going with Dan to Ireland tomorrow.” No one argued with me, they just nodded and told me to be careful.

“Make sure you pack all your essentials.” Shawn ‘helpfully’ reminded me.

“Dan’s already packed.” I told him.

“Shit. Let me do it. Dan is an idiot.” Glen exclaimed, jumping up and running to the bedroom to pack the bags.

“I should probably provide moral support.” Danny sighed following Glen a little slower.

“Anyone else wanna help pack bags?” I asked with a smile.

“You sure you want to go? It isn’t a big deal if you can’t.” I felt as if Mark was looking into the depths of my soul. It was almost scary.

“I have to be there for him. He was there for me when I needed him most, the least I can do is offer the same. And it would be a big deal, Dan is obviously upset and worried. We both know if he went to Ireland alone he may well turn to alcohol and I can’t go through that again, but he would also constantly be thinking what’s going on at home. I will go with him and it will all be fine.” I explained, a ghost of a smile was on Mark’s lips as he nodded in agreement.

“Just checking.” He mumbled.

“Speaking of checking, I want a check in every day. I would prefer a phone call, but obviously I may be working.” Shawn announced, I rolled my eyes but in reality it’s touching. That me and these guys have grown so close now. We really are a family.

“I will Shawn.” I promised. “Now what’s for dinner?”

“I swear all you think about is food!” He complained.

“It isn’t all I think about.” I argued, trying to look hurt. I don’t really think it worked, Shawn just rolled his eyes at me.

“That pizza topped chicken stuff you love so much sound okay?”

“Love you!” I laughed, throwing myself at him and giving him a massive hug.

“Make sure you look after each other.” He whispered into my ear.

“Of course.” I replied, glancing back at the bedroom. Dan must feel like shit right now. Family is so important to him and after what happened with his Dad he will want to be there for his Mum. And for the rest of his family.

“He can’t wait for you to meet her.” Mark informed me after Shawn had gone to start dinner.

“What?”

“Meeting his mum, he really wants you two to get along. She never really liked Irma.” He continued. Shit. I hadn’t even thought of that. Damn it. His Mum. I would have to meet his mum. Under really stressful circumstances. Stay strong, think positive thoughts. I can do this. The way Dan talks about her, she must be an angel, he loves her so much and to raise a boy like him. Well, she could only be perfect. That’s it Amy, flattery. Honestly, I get the feeling she’ll be a lot like my Mum. And I’m not sure how that makes me feel if I’m honest. One day to mentally prepare myself for this. Fuck.
