I woke up screaming, covered in sweat with Danny O’Donoghue wrapped around me.
“I shouldn’t have left. I’m so sorry.” He muttered. It took my brain a while to catch up. “You were so peaceful, I thought you would be more comfortable in your own bed. Shit. Sorry.” He blabbered.
“Shut up Danny.” I sighed. “Its fine, I’m used to it now.” Sadly, this was true. Countless nights are ruined by my stupid nightmares, even in the safety of the hospital. Danny sighed sadly.
“Shawn said he would be back early morning. Did you want me to hang around, find something to do, get the boys to meet us?” He offered.
“That sounds great Danny.” But I know my voice sounded empty. I just, couldn’t even fake it. He crawled in next to me, I felt an emotional moment coming on.
“You know, when I was little, say 4 or 5. I was playing out in the street with my friends, playing football. And the ball rolled out into the road. Without even thinking my mate Josh ran out to get it, the car didn’t see him.” I’d never heard this before, Danny’s eyes were shimmering with tears. “He was rushed to hospital, but the damage was too bad. For years after I had the most terrible nightmares, I’d hear the crack and the screams.” He sighed. “But eventually, I accepted it, it became normal. And after a while, the nightmares stopped. Sometimes, I’ll have it again. Wake up screaming or crying, or just afraid. You are never alone okay. Even when you feel like you are. If you ever need a shoulder to cry on or someone who understands, I am always here, I will always be here. You can talk to me.” I was amazed, at how open he is with me. Just, spilling his guts, telling me his secrets to make me feel better about myself.
“Promise?” I felt like a little child, but in this moment, I was.
“Of course darling, promise.” He held me close again.
“They feel so real.” I whispered.
“I know. But they aren’t, those dicks are behind bars. And will be for a long time. They can never hurt you again.” I knew he was right. Even in my messed up brain, I registered that. They can’t hurt me. But they already have, they already took my family. Took more than my family.
“Thank you, for being here. For understanding, for sharing your stories with me.”
“Go to sleep love, I’ll be here when you wake up.” And he would be, I know it. Because he’s been through shit like this, he knows how alone you feel. He wants to help. He is helping. So I relaxed into his arms and fell asleep a few minutes later.
Thank God she is asleep. I can’t believe I told her that, I haven’t spoken about that in years. I mean, Mark and Glen know it happened, but they don’t know about the nightmares. They don’t know that it still bothers me. And here I am, sitting in her bed holding her as she sleeps after telling her things my lifelong friend doesn’t know. But it helped, that’s why I’m here. To fix her. And it worked, I managed to cheer her up a bit after the horrible situation earlier that afternoon and after the nightmare. Honestly, the night wasn’t that bad. She’s a great girl, she really is. The problem is finding that girl, she’s lost and whenever she comes to the surface something comes along and rips her back down. She started smiling in her sleep, at least she isn’t having a nightmare. I lay my head back and let my mind wander. Eventually, I drifted to a dreamless sleep.
Danny had his arms locked around me when I woke up, I had to wiggle free. He began to frown in his sleep, it was too adorable so I took a quick picture. Glen and Mark would love this. I went into the kitchen and got a glass of water. Shawn was home, his laptop bag was by the door and he takes that to work with him. I glanced up at the clock. 8 AM, not too bad. Now, what to do. Danny has plans for us when he gets up, but I don’t know what they are. Or when he will decide to get up. Food, or no food? That is the question. The rumbling stomach answered for me. No one else is awake, so cookies and milk it is. I smiled as I got comfortable on the sofa, my phone was on my lap. Time to check twitter, and sure enough I had a follow from The Script and Danny O’Donoghue, I posted it on Facebook so I could brag to Susan. I snapped a pic of the cookies and sent a tweet to Danny, ‘Haha! Should have got up earlier @TheScript_Danny’ Some of the people who followed me were asking questions like, why the fuck does it matter if he gets up… Good question, no one knows he is here. Obviously. I ate my first cookie, texting Susan. ‘Danny is really lazy and Shawn is asleep…. Wanna meet up?’ She relied within seconds, ‘fuck yesh. Text the address.’ I sent her the address, she would be 20-30 minutes. Better get ready for her I guess. I snuck into my room and grabbed some clothes, careful not to wake Danny, who was still fast asleep. I brushed my teeth and put my hair up when I heard a gentle knock at the door. I had given Susan the code, great. No one is up. I opened the door quietly and snuck out. Phone in hand.
“Please tell me they know where you are?” Susan asked with a sigh.
“No, they don’t. They are sleeping okay, there’s a note on the fridge and I have my phone.” I justified.
“Whatever.” She muttered.
“Damn right, let’s go for a walk. I’m meeting the boys later on, did you want to come too?” I offered as we walked down the stairs.
“Yep!” She answered excitedly.
“Fabulous. I don’t know what we’re doing, the lazy arse refuses to tell me.”
“Wait! He stayed round yours last night?”
“Mmhmm. We had Dominoes and watched movies, very nice.” I missed out the whole breakdown and the emotional heart to heart. There are something’s she just doesn’t need to know.
“Lucky bitch.” She laughed.
“He’s a great friend, he really is.”
“You’ve talked to him, like 3 times.” She pointed out.
“But, it feels like we’ve been friends for years. We have an understanding.”
“Sure. Where are we going?” It sounded like she was just saying that to make me happy. And to shut me up.
“Urm. There’s a park round the corner, might be nice.” She shrugged and I took that as a ‘sure Amy that sounds great’. We headed on our way.
It was 10:30 when I next checked my phone, me and Susan had been chatting away happily for a while.
“Shit.” I muttered. Danny and Shawn had both tried to call, more than once. As I stared at my phone in horror Danny phoned again. “Hello.” I answered as innocently as I could.
“Where are you? Are you okay? Damn it, why did you run off?” He asked question after question.
“At the park round the corner, I’m fine, you guys were all asleep and I was bored.” He sighed at that.
“Do you want to come back? Or shall I meet you there?”
“Here is fine I guess.” With another sigh he hung up. Well, it could have gone worse.
