How Dan managed to get us on a flight so quickly I don’t know, but we were in Ireland in time for lunch the next day.

“I know this great little Café.” Dan smiled, taking me by the hand and dragging me down another street. I know he is avoiding going to see his Mum straight away, I can tell, but I’ll let him have a little time before I bring it up again.

“I can’t wait Dan.” I laughed, I was nearly running to keep up with him. “Slow down a bit.”

“Sorry.” He walked a little slower, but not by much. “Here we are.” He had pulled me inside before I had even had a chance to get a good look. It was nice though, relaxing and calm, not too busy. Dan took us to a little table. “I’ll get your drink.” He kissed my cheek and was off in a flash. Wow. This guy is crazy today. I think it’s just nerves, I know he’s worried about his Mum, he wants to see her but it also scared about what he’ll see. “Here you go babe.” He placed a delicious looking brownie in front of me and a hot chocolate. He knows me so well. “With caramel.” He winked.

“You are an angel.” I smiled, taking a gulp of the drink. “Shit, this is good. You are so right.”

“Told you.” He beamed happily, drinking his own drink. We had a great time, he was talking about Dublin and the great parts and memories and stuff. We talked a lot. But, not about his mum. He was on his second cup of tea and I knew I had to say it.

“You know, we should really go visit your Mum.” I reminded him.

“I know.” He sighed. The smile had quickly faded from his face and I hate that I had to do that, but I know he will regret not going to see her. He called a taxi and wrapped his arm around me. He’s gone very quiet, probably thinking, and apparently just wants some physical comfort. I tried not to think about who I would be meeting shortly. Nope, not letting it bother me at all.

We didn’t talk all the way there, I’m glad. My mind was running wild with thoughts and emotions, but Amy still let me hold her close. I just needed that, to have that reminder she is here with me. She gripped my hand as she walked to reception with me.

“I’m here to see Ailish O’Donoghue.” I told her, trying not to let my voice shake too much.

“Room 153, second floor. Your family are all in there already.” The receptionist replied, great, I had hoped they wouldn’t be here. That’s what I get for putting it off. Amy was leading the way, I don’t know what I’d do without her. She has been so supportive since she found out, so caring.

“I’ll wait out here Dan. You two need some time together.” She informed me quietly.

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah baby. I’ll be right outside.” She pulled me into a kiss, a sad smile on her face. This can’t be easy for her, she hates hospitals for good reason.
