We were sat in her hospital room, all three of us, in silence. We hadn’t talked about last night, not really. And I’m glad, there are no excuses really. On a slightly happier note, the doctors had told us she was improving, that they think she could wake up in the next few days, that’s what their test results say anyway. Sat here next to her, there doesn’t seem to be a change.

“Hurry up and wake up.” I begged her, not for the first time. “Please, it’s crazy without you. I miss our stupid arguments and all the silly things we do together. I want to be able to walk down the street with you, take you to our shows and interviews, to look over and see you laughing and smiling. I want you. I need you back.” Why didn’t I have the courage to say this to her when she was awake? When she was able to hear it? I may never really know.

“She’ll be okay Dan, we all know that. She will wake up.” Glen comforted, I had forgotten they were here to be honest.

“Yeah.” I sighed.

“You and Mark have an interview today. With one of the radio stations, it shouldn’t be too long. I can stay with her.” Glen offered. I nodded, smiling gratefully. The man is an angel.

“Mum?” Amy croaked. We all jumped up.

“Amy, oh god, you’re awake!” I cheered.

“Who are you? Where’s my Mum and Dad?” Silence, the smiles were wiped from our faces, forget the fact she doesn’t remember us, she doesn’t remember the fact her family are gone.

“We are gunna call the nurse in for you, everything is going to be okay.” I told her, trying to stay calm and not react completely over the top.

“I don’t understand, where am I? Shouldn’t my family be here?” She asked, desperate for answers.

“Try not to speak too much darling.” Glen advised. “You are in the hospital, you’ve been in a coma for the past 3 days.”

“What happened? Why aren’t my family here?” Always the difficult questions.

“I’ll go and call Shawn.” Mark announced, leaving the room.

“Who the fuck is Shawn?” Amy shouted, or tried to shout, sounding slightly hysterical. At that point a nurse came in.

“I’m going to have to ask you guys to leave for now, we can contact you when you can come back in.”

I feel like I know these people, they look pretty familiar. But that is not the issue, I am in hospital apparently just waking up from a coma and my family are nowhere to be seen. At that point a man walked in, he looked very official and serious and clever; I’m going with Doctor.

“Hello again Amy.” He greeted.

“I’m sorry, we haven’t met.” I replied, confused.

“I’m Dr Murphy, we believe that your memory has been affected by the head trauma you suffered. Can you tell me the last thing you remember?”

“I’m not really sure, it’s Friday 13th tomorrow though. If that helps, I guess that was a few days ago if I was in a coma.” I told him, I honestly don’t even know why I’m here. “Can you tell me where my family are? And who those guys were?” He looked at me with eyes full of sadness.

“Amy, those men are the people who brought you in, part of the band The Script.” I knew I recognised them, but why did they bring me here. “We can talk about your family at another time, for now you need to rest.” With that he left, considering I had been in a coma for 3 days I was pretty tired.

Dr Murphy approached us.

“It seems she is having difficulties with her memory, the head trauma has affected this and I believe as a way to protect herself her mind has gone back to Thursday 12th, the day before the attack on her family. That is the last day she can remember. She doesn’t seem to recognise anything from after that date.” This is bad.

“Will she regain her memory?” I asked, praying she does.

“It’s possible, we are going to give her a few more days and see if there is any change. It may just be that she is disorientated and not fully healed, in a few days or even a few hours she could be back to her usual self. I’m afraid only time will tell.”

“Thank you Doc, you’ve been a great help.” Glen thanked him and shook his hand, letting me drop back into the seat. I’m happy and sad right now, this has not gone how we hoped it would.

“Oh, you can’t go in at the moment, she is resting. But you should be allowed back in soon.” He said as he walked away. Great. We can visit her when she doesn’t remember anything about us, doesn’t remember the fun times we’ve had and all of that jazz.

“Mark and I might as well leave now, I might stop by the pub. For a meal.” I announced, a meal and a drink, but a meal does sound pretty good right now.

“Alright mate, be careful. I keep my promises, I’ll stay here for her.”

“You are an angel.” I confessed, pulling him into a hug.

“I promise I won’t let him get too drunk.” Mark chuckled as we walked away. This is good. Amy is awake, I’m going to the pub and I think I could quite easily get Mark drunk enough to get me drunk. And the plan is a go. Sorry to disappoint Glenny, but this is half celebration and half drowning disappointment that she doesn’t remember anything. Not even a little thing. Jeez, she didn’t even recognise us as the celebrities, probably just the head injury. You can get round all this Dan. The best way to do so – alcohol.
