Chapter 57

The O’Donoghues seemed to have decided I was one of them. After returning from a little walk each person hugged me, Dan sneaking in a kiss. It was nice, I felt refreshed after that walk. Being in hospital, it just, I hate it. There is something about them that fills me with dread, I needed out. Even if it was only for a minute.

“Sweetie, you watch my boy for me alright. He’s a handful, but if anyone can do it it’s you.” Ailish smiled.

“Of course Ailish, I can try my hardest.”

“None of this Ailish business, you are family. Call me Ma.” My heart stopped, she continued to smile at me. Dan held me close to him, maybe he was worried about how I would respond to this.

“Really?” I asked, my voice was barely above a whisper.

“Yes dear.” A tear trickled down my face as I pulled her into a hug.

“Thank you.” I whispered into her ear.

“Anyone who can make my boy this happy can stay.” She laughed. “Now, shoo boys. I think some girl talk is required.”

“I’ll wait in the café babe.” Dan pressed a kiss to my cheek. “Don’t talk about me too much.”

“Only the bad things.” I teased, making him smile even more.

“You better not.” He stuck out his tongue before leaving the room.

“Still childish?” Andrea chuckled, shaking her head fondly.

“Is it even possible for him to grow up?” I chuckled.

“As his mother, no, no it is not.” Ailish, or Ma, decided. “Now, sweetie tell us about dear old Daniel.”

“What is there to say? He is my rock, practically my whole life. Without him, my life would just be meaningless, it would be empty. I mean, he gives up so much for me, has risked the band countless times, his own career being put on the line and when I question it he just shrugs it off and tells me he loves me. The man is an angel, he is my angel.”

“You two are so adorable.” Andrea commented.

“He loves you so much you know.” Ma informed me.

“I do, it’s just hard to accept. I know he can do so much better, let’s face it this isn’t going to help his career. I’ll just bring him down.” I explained with a sigh, thank god Dan isn’t here now. He would kill me for thinking like that.

“Oh darling, he doesn’t care about the fame. It’s not something he values, not as much as love. His love for music brought him this far, it’s his love for you that keeps him going now. You can see it, he thinks the world of you. He listens to every word you say, his eyes light up when you’re together.”

“And when he talks about you he can’t help but smile, he even gets this dreamy look sometimes.” Andrea added, I couldn’t help but smile. If his family think it, it must be true.

“This is why you’re family, because I have never seen my boy so happy. And it’s you who has done that. You may not think it, but you have made his life better. Trust me when I say, his fame means nothing to him. He would give it all away for you, he still has his music and he would have you, and I think those two things are all he needs.” Ailish continued.

“The way he looks at you, honestly, I don’t think I’ve seen so much love in someone’s eyes. In fact, that’s a lie. When you look at him you have a similar look. You love him so much and it’s just adorable. A part of me wants you two to just marry and be happy.” We all laughed at that last bit.

“I am so happy that he has a girl like you, we were all too harsh on you. You are what he needs I think, someone to ground him and keep him sane. You two are perfect for each other.” Ailish finished off, pulling me and Andrea into a hug.

“Thank you so much, I can’t explain how much this means to me. That you accept what we have and have let me into your family. It, I mean, it means the world to me really.” I smiled, struggling to find the words to explain how I felt.

“How could we not? You are a lovely person, for once Dan has made a good decision on his own.” Andrea was a laugh, I really like her actually.

“My Daniel doesn’t have the best track record, sometimes he does stupid things with stupid people, and sometimes he can mess up all on his own. With you, he seems to forget all that, his one thought is you. You talked him down from punching Ian yesterday, not many people can do that. Honestly, I think it’s happened once. After his Da died, he really struggled. Those two were so close, Daniel really looked up to Shay. Sometimes his sadness turned into anger, he was quick to turn and when he did you wouldn’t want to be anywhere near him. I saw that in his eyes yesterday, but you brought him back. I’m glad to know he has you, someone who really knows him, who he trusts.” Ailish informed me.

“I think he does, trust me that is. We both sort through the crap in our lives, he gets through it all by talking to me and I do the same. He still struggles, but I am always there for him because there hasn’t been a moment since he met me when he has abandoned me. Sure, he made a few mistakes and we spent some time apart. But that can’t all be blamed on him and he always came back. He was always there to pick up the pieces. Even if he was a little late sometimes.”

“I think you two are my dream couple, I mean, you are too cute. Everything about you two is perfect.” Andrea beamed. “How about you and lover boy enjoy a night out? Maybe when Ma is healthy again we will all fly over and treat you to an O’Donoghue dinner.” She suggested.

“It sounds lovely, but don’t you think it should be us flying over?”

“Ah, I need some time out of dear old Dublin. It’s no bother to us, we’ll get Daniel to pay.” Ailish decided, she reminds me a little of my mum, but in a good way. She is the loveliest woman.

“That sounds great, I’ll tell Dan. I’m sure we will be back tomorrow.” I waved my good byes and headed out the door. Wow. That happened. It went from dreadful first meeting, to being fully accepted into the O’Donoghue Clan. This is completely crazy.
