He held me close, he was already asleep, I could feel his breath against my shoulder. The night was perfect. We stayed at the bar for a short amount of time, Dan insisted we come home after two pints. I think he is still wary of how much he drinks, after all the trouble it caused last time. But, we had a good time, an amazing time. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a single night this much. Maybe that’s why I can’t sleep, I don’t want it to end. I managed to turn in his arms, able to look at his face instead of the wall. He was so relaxed, so peaceful. His hair was beginning to droop, some strands of hair sticking to his forehead. Perfection. He is an angel, I could just look at him for hours. I couldn’t help it, I had to reach out and touch him. Brushing those stray hairs from his face, running my hand softly over his cheek.
“Mmm. What is it?” He asked sleepily, his words slurring together.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you.” I whispered. “Go back to sleep.”
“Okay.” He mumbled, he was barely awake. “Love you.” He snuggled closer, pressing his lips against my forehead.
“Love you too.” I smiled, enjoying the warmth of his body. It didn’t take long for him to fall asleep again, his breathing slowing and becoming more regular. I could feel the steady beating of his heart through my own skin.
I need to make it last forever. This happiness, this love, it just completes me. I don’t know how to describe it, I have purpose, someone and something to live for. The smile on her face last night, that sparkle in her eyes, it made it real. Everything clicked in that moment. She’s the one. No doubts. No if’s or but’s. Even in sleep she has a ghost of a smile, so different from when we first met, countless nights were spent crying. I would comfort her after her nightmares, would be there for her when she needed a friend. There were times when she was too afraid to even close her eyes, now she sleeps peacefully. Smiles even. Things really have changed, all for the better.
“What are you doing?” She asked, making me jump and drop the pan on the floor.
“Jesus, you scared me!” I laughed, her own laughter joined mine. What has come over me? I am feeling romantic, I’m feeling in love, poetic almost.
“Sorry Dan.”
“Eh, don’t be sorry. I was just cooking up some breakfast.” I shrugged, grabbing the pan and placing it on the side.
“You didn’t have to Danno.” She smiled.
“I wanted to, I was awake anyway.” She went over to butter some toast, helping me without a word. I wrapped my arms around her, pressing my face into the crook of her neck. I saw the smile on her face.
“Can I help you?” Her voice was full happiness, her playful teasing clear.
