Chapter 54

“You really do love her.” Ma stated, smiling still.

“Yeah, I do. I love her so much Ma.” I fell onto the bed next to her, sitting beside her. She held onto my hand.

“She seems like a nice girl.”

“Oh she is, she is the best thing in my life right now. She is lovely, Mark and Glen get on with her really well. It’s like we’ve known her forever.” I sighed, smiling like an idiot. But I couldn’t help it.

“Don’t you think she is just after money?” Ian asked, I’m sure he thinks he is protecting me or looking out for me or whatever. But I can make my own decisions. I ignored him. “Daniel, don’t you think she could be using you?” He shouted, forcing an answer out of me. The anger I felt was too much to contain, I rounded on him, hands clenched.

“Don’t you dare say that about her! You know nothing about her! Did you not listen to the story? I was the one who went after her, the one who insisted on having a place in her life. This is NOT her fault, she isn’t like that.” I shouted back.

“Daniel, don’t shout at your brother he is looking out for you.” Ma warned me.

“He has no right to say that, after everything we’ve been through I think we both know how we feel. He can’t just point fingers, accusing her because Irma was a bitch.” I tried to keep my voice level, I mean, we are talking about my Ma. She’s ill already, I can’t go making things worse, but if they keep pushing me I know I’ll do something I’ll regret.

 

 

I bought myself a packet of crisps, a chocolate bar and a wrap thing. Then I can share with Dan. He looked happy and that makes me happy, I started the slow walk back upstairs. Being careful not to spill Dan’s tea. I was just reaching the door when I heard raised voices.

“You need to watch her! That is all I’m saying.”

“And I’m saying you are wrong. I thought you liked her?” Dan asked, obviously upset and angry.

“Daniel, just look out for yourself.” Ailish spoke quietly, I could barely hear her.

“Don’t let her break your heart. She is using you! Open your eyes.” One of the brothers snapped, I knew this would throw Dan over the edge. I opened the door quickly, putting the stuff on the table and standing in front of Dan.

“Move.” He ordered.

“Danny, I will not let you do that. Come on, you have been so much better recently.” I sighed, meeting his eyes. He was already upset and these guys just kept on pushing.

“But, he and I.” He started.

“I know what was going on, I was outside the door. I don’t care Dan.” I kissed his cheek, a tear falling down his face. “Come on babe, be happy.”
