Chapter Forty Six
Reflection
Oh man, just by looking at the title this chapter is boring me out. Lol. But like its an interesting chapter, I think. . .
---
It's just an average day, average routine, nothing new. It's like I never even left.
I wake up, brush my teeth, get dressed, eat lunch, watch TV.
Nothing exciting, just the same boring Monday afternoon.
"Girls, you can't just sit there on the couch all afternoon," Mum steps out of the kitchen, her apron filthy. She's probably baking something, like always whenever she's not out working.
I look at Talia beside me still in her pyjamas; she looks back at me.
"C'mon guys! It's Monday afternoon, you have a week off from school," she's interrupted by the ring of the doorbell. Mum rolls her eyes and walks up to the door and opens it.
"Darling," I turn my head to see dad in the doorway, in his work clothes. "Your not supposed to be back until late today, what happened?"
I turn to Talia, she shrugs and we both shift our heads back to dad.
"I know," he brings mum in for a light kiss, "I left my files here," he walks past mum, and finally, he notices us on the couch.
"Oh! How are you two girls?" He asks kissing us both on the head.
"Tired," Talia says pulling the blanket around her body.
"Mum wants us to do something 'active'," I groan.
"I see," he turns to mum still standing by the door, "you know on Wednesday there's the carnival."
"I know," I say bluntly, "we're going."
"I guess that's active enough to last the week," he says, a grin spreads across my face and dad laughs. "Enjoy your week off."
He hugs us both before walking up the stairs retrieving his work files. "If dad says it's fine then I'm staying on the couch."
"Fine," my mother huffs in defeat as dad rushes down the stairs; files in one arm. He gives my mum a quick kiss and bids his goodbye before slamming the door behind him.
Mum walks into the kitchen an I turn to Talia. "I'm bored," I say bluntly.
"Same," she looks around the house looking for something to do, "we could go to the mall."
"Nah," I say mentally crossing out that possibility.
"Uh, we could go to Costa Café for a while." Thinking that over for a bit I shrug.
"Nah," I say looking at the clock, "c'mon we can't just spend the entire day on the couch!"
She laughs, "we could go to an amusement park."
"How about we save that for another day?" I say, mentally putting a star next to the option.
"Fine," she grumbles under her breath. "What else could we do?"
"We could. . ." I look around the room and my eyes land on the kitchen, "bake?"
"That seams fun but what about mum?" I groan and nod.
"Shit," I mumble under my breath, "we need to get her out of the house."
"Shopping?"
"She doesn't shop, or even go to the mall unless it's an emergency." I say imagining my mum in a Tesco shopping line with piles of shopping bags.
"Damn," she laughs, "what if we just tell her to get out of the house?"
"Yeah, how about that!" I say sarcastically.
"Shut up, it helps to try," she gets up from the couch and walks towards the kitchen door
"Hey aunty, Mel and I want to bake so we wanted to ask if you could. . ." she stops and turns to me, "she not there."
I sit up and jump off the couch running to Talia. I laugh, "she's probably in the backyard."
I take out all the materials for baking and check the oven. Talia takes mixing duty as I pour and take measurements of the portions of food.
"How's it going between you and Kyle?" Talia says sitting on the island mixing the bowl of muffin mix.
"Good," I bite the inside of my cheek.
"Did he find out?"
"About?" I look at her furrowing my eyebrows.
"About Conrad and you last night."
"No," I whisper, "he-" I stop myself mid-way.
"He what?" She asks after a few seconds of waiting.
"Nothing," I fight the urge to tell her, but I know eventually I will have to, so I do, "Kyle smelt like Alex when I hugged him," Talia doesn't say anything at first so I continue.
"When I told him why he did, he said that when he hugged Tanner's girlfriend the perfume must have gotten on him." I take a short breath, just the thought of Alex and him makes my breathing jagged. I bite my lower lip, Alex and Kyle.
Does that even work? She taps her chin, "don't you think you might have imagined it?"
"Shit," I take a step back, shocked.
"But how does that even work?" She says confused at my actions. I don't say anything, I let her think about it for a minute before I explain.
But I can't bring myself to say it, he could've lied. Tanner might not even have a girlfriend. Kyle might've not slept with Alex, and when I mentioned that he smelt like her he could've have blew me off and said I was imagining it.
But he didn't.
He panicked; his eyes widened. He made up an excuse about Tanner's girlfriend -- because it was true, he slept with Alex.
"No," I say, mostly to myself. "He wouldn't, he didn't," I turn my body away from Talia and look out the kitchen window above the sink.
"You can't be sure Mel," Talia tells me, so much for the reassurance. I shake my head, no.
I see her faded reflection in the mirror, she sets the bowl on the countertop and walks towards me.
I shrug her off, "he wouldn't do that Tal, he's not like that. He doesn't like Alex, he knows what she did to me. Why would he if he knew what she did?" I look to the countertop where Kyle aided my jaw.
"I know but-" she stops herself without my help. I shift my position.
"I need to forget about Conrad." I say getting Kyle out of my mind.
"And how do you plan to do that?" She says eyeing me. I shrug, not really knowing.
"Look, Alex, Stella and Conrad need to get out my life. I left with you guys so I could get a break. But I'm back, and I need to fix everything." I say taking a deep breath, Talia looks at me confused.
"Fix what?"
"Everything," she gives me a strange look, "starting with my diary."
I smirk and fold my arms across my chest, "Tal, I know what we're going to do today."
"After we bake these muffins?" She says, I nod. "And what are we going to do?" She asks after awhile of waiting.
"We're gonna take a trip to Conrad's."
-END OF CHAPTER FOURTY SIX-
Okay, I purposely made this chapter short so I can write the next chapter with a new 'setting'
