Chapter Thirty One
Stay With Me?
---
I don't know how long it's been. Probably an hour. Nobodies has come or noticed my disappearance so I guess I'm fine. I stand up and my knees buckle and I fall to the ground. I groan and stand up again. My legs stay firm. I take dangerous step and then another to the door. I push it open and a sudden burst of kids yelling fills my ears. I stand firm and casually walk out the door.
It's probably Lunch.
I turn left and walk down the loud hallway. Teens line the walls, some walking in groups, some standing by the wall as if they have all the time in the world. I brush past a few people mumbling apologies as I pass, in my small voice. I make it to my locker but I don't stop there. I walk past it an to the front doors. I walk through the parking lot not making eye contact.
I see Conrad in the distance near the motorcycles surrounded by his football buddies, including Kyle. They don't see me. Kyle has a smile on his face I haven't seen in a long time. Like he hasn't a care in the world.
Does he not love me back?
I walk all the way home. Yes, Kyle dropped me to school. And right now, I'd rather walk in the pouring rain then ask him for a ride home.
As if my words were a trigger it starts trickling down with cold raindrops. I look up at the sky as I start to walk down my neighbourhood pavement. The sky is cloudless and grey. Dark and gloomy. The sun is gone but it's not dark. The houses are quiet but activity is still going on within. A car passes by and I glance at it. Blinking twice.
It's not Kyle, Mel. "Coming!" I hear my mother yell as I knock on the door. The door swings open and my mother --all dolled up -- appears. Heavy make up masking her plain face, her light hair tied up in a tight bun, a black pencil skirt with a black blouse covering her petite body.
"Oh! Mel honey, what are you doing home? You still have 2 hours left of school! Did you forget your lunch?" I shrug. "Oh don't tell me you ditched! Melody Melendez. I thought I raised you better than this. Go back now."
"If your trying to intimidate me, it's not working." I say matter-of-factly obviously not giving a shit about what she says.
"Melody! What is wrong with you? Your never like this!"
"Whatever." I mumble as I gently shoulder passed her to the stairs. I take one step when she stops me.
"MELODY! Where do you think your going! I can't let your just ditch school! What is wrong with you?" I take a deep breath and turn to face her, keeping a hand on the railing.
"Nothing." I take a few steps before she calls out again.
"Melody. Your father and I pay a lot of money to send you to school. The least you could do is-"
"Don't you have somewhere to be?" I snap back at her, making her shut up.
"Fine! If you don't get good grades this year you can say hello to boarding school." She says before stomping out the house, slamming the door behind her.
"Boarding school? That actually sounds pretty good right now." I say to the her even though she can't hear. I hear the car door closing and the roar of the engine as she drives away.
"Good riddance." I mumble under my breath. I walk up the rest of the stairs to my room. I look at the time on the clock. 1:58pm. Right now I'd be in English, bored as hell.
Flop onto my bed and flip to my back, staring at the ceiling ahead. I close my eyes.
I image back to the hallway near my locker. How his head fit perfectly in the crook of my neck. How his lips were so soft when he kissed my cheek. I raise my hand to touch my cheek. What did I do? What have I done? I'm losing the one guy I actually care about a lot and feels the same way about me. Felt, Mel. He doesn't feel the same way.
