Chapter 17.4: Bridge
The game has started. Vince was dribbling the ball continuously, waiting for the referee's cue. He's not looking at anyone, his eyes were only fixated on the ball that he was dribbling. I can't see his face because his head's swinging low. When the referee blew his whistle, we squatted while waiting for the ball. Vince looked at the net, totally avoiding everyone's gaze.
Vince served the ball and...
I tried chasing the ball but it went outside the court. The linemen gestured outside so the referee gave the points to Crimson. I looked at Vince; he's apologizing to his teammates. When our gaze met, he just avoided it. The lineman behind me gave me the ball. Just like Vince, I dribbled the ball while waiting for the whistle of the referee. And when I heard the whistle, I served it. I intentionally served it through Vince's direction. But something came up... he wasn't expecting it. He just stared at it and he didn't receive it.
"Matthew, tanga!" I heard Ate Xyle shouted, but Vince's mind was just floating somewhere.
"I-I'm sorry." He stuttered as he apologized. The ball is on me again. And when the referee whistled again, I served it to Ate Xyle's direction. She received it and returned it to us. Zeus received it and tossed it to Aldrich. Aldrich threw me a glance before hitting the ball towards my direction. I ran to make a spike. Lalo akong nagtaka nang ilagan 'yon ni Vince. This time, I shouted.
"Ano ba, Vince?! Focus!" I shouted and he looked at me. He looked surprised but he smiled a bit as they went in the middle of the court to talk a little while. I saw everyone nodded as they went back to their positions. I served again, the ball went to the middle, they tried chasing it but no one succeed. It was our point again. 4-0.
C'mon! Give us a good game, Vince!
I served it again to the right side, the player there, caught it and received it, pinapunta niya ang bola kay Ate Xyle, pinapunta 'yon ni Ate Xyle sa direksyon ni Vince. And hinampas 'yon ni Vince. I ran as fast as I could so I could receive it, and I succeeded. Pinapunta ko 'yon kay Ate Cha. She tossed it so pinaliban ko ulit 'yon sa court. The tall girl received it. Binalik niya 'yon sa amin at nareceive ko. Pinapunta ko naman 'yon kay Aldrich, I gestured at Yana and she understands it. She spiked it at na-receive 'yon ni Ate Xyle. Binigay niya 'yon sa isang lalaking ka-team nila at hinampas 'yon ni Vince papunta sa amin. But suddenly, walang bantay doon. So kanila na ang bola.
The game flowed well. For the first set they won with a three-point lead. I don't know how it happened but I think Vince is back to his usual self again. I wonder why he became that other-worldly. Para siyang alien kanina na walang pakialam sa mundo which is the total opposite of him. I sighed.
In the second set, we won. I noticed that they don't have blockers, so we hit their disadvantage for the sake of the game. They don't have too much teamwork too, so I made sure that the Crimsons have that teamwork that they don't have.
It was the third set. I am resting, Usher, Aldrich's friend replaced me. I was drinking my Gatorade when Vince sat beside me. He's wiping himself with a towel. He's sweating but he's still fragrant. Amoy baby.
"Why are you giggling?" he asked while looking at me with a creased forehead. My eyes widened, I bit my lower lip.
Did I giggle?
"Did I?" I asked, it sounds muffled because I'm still biting my lip.
"You giggled! Tell me, anong ginawa sa 'yo ni Ken?" he asked with a serious tone. My eyes narrowed into slits when he asked me that, tinanggal ko na rin ang pagkakagat sa labi ko.
