Chapter 28.1: Retreat
"Shane!" I heard a loud voice calling my name while we're out of the gymnasium. I took off my arm clinging onto Demi's arm as I looked at the person who called me. It was Vince, my shoulders stiffened as I saw him running towards me.
"Brey, una na kami," Demi whispered but I held her arms tighter.
"Please, no!" I whispered, but she just smirked. She hit my hands, that's why she freed herself.
"Sorry, Brey. Mahal kita, pero kailangan ko 'tong gawin," she said dramatically. I scoffed when she ran away leaving me behind with the person I am avoiding.
"Can we talk?" he asked. I looked around trying to find some reason not to. "Just a minute, please?" he whispered. I nodded and smiled awkwardly.
"Sure, why not?" I replied.
"Thank you," he smiled a bit as he walked towards the side of the gymnasium. I just followed him. "First, I want to say sorry," he started. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion.
"Sorry for what?" I asked.
"For what happened earlier, diyan sa bukol mo. I'm so sorry." He bowed his head slightly, I looked at him straight as I cast a small smile.
"This is nothing," I whispered. "You don't have to be sorry, it's an accident after all."
"Still am sorry," he said. I just heaved a sigh. If he's just apologizing, he could have just sent me a message. He shouldn't waste his precious time for me. "Uh, can I ask you something?" I looked at him as I nodded reluctantly.
"Okay, sure."
"Are you avoiding me?" His face is now dead serious which made me so nervous.
Because yes, I was really avoiding him. But if I tell him that, he will ask for my reason and that would reveal too much from me. If I say no, I will be lying to him again. I know, nakakahalata na siya na hindi ako transparent sa kaniya and I don't want him to be disappointed. But...
I shook my head slowly.
"N-No, why would I? Is there any reason to avoid you?" I asked as I laughed awkwardly, but he remained serious.
"Ayokong magmukhang mayabang or something, pero... Is it true na..." He took a pause as he avoided my gaze. He bit his lower lip and I saw his cheeks puffed. I remained staring at his face while gently reading his expression, careful to skip any info. "Na... Na may gusto ka sa akin?" That left me dumbfounded; my mouth gaped open while staring at him and blinking my eyes.
Now, how would I answer him?
Biglang nanikip ang dibdib ko sa kaba. Pinilit kong itago ang kaba pero wala na akong magawa.
I can't answer him. Ayokong masira ang friendship namin. Ilang tulak pa, alam kong malalaman niya na na gusto ko siya pero hindi dapat. Isa pa, he's in a relationship and I don't want to ruin that.
"Uh..." I can't utter a word, I don't know if I look guilty in his eyes but I can't avoid these reactions. "Uh, ano..." Shemay! "I-I am sorry---"
"Shanel?" I instantly looked behind me when I saw Ken standing there, holding a bouquet of roses. Agad siyang tumakbo papunta sa direksyon ko. And I want to thank him for coming at the time I needed him the most. "Sinabi sa akin ni Kuya ang nangyari, okay ka lang ba?" he asked as he spat my forehead, "Tsk," he clicked his tongue. "Ang pangit ng band aid na 'yan para sa date natin mamaya." My eyes widened after hearing his words. He looked at me as if saying something behind those eyes; my brows almost knitted.
