Chapter 29: He Loves
"Picture, picture," Demi shouted as she raised her phone in front of us. I smiled a little at the camera. I don't know why I can't feel real happiness at this moment even though we have just finished our high school stage. Maybe because Audrey didn't attend our graduation day and we were incomplete.
Okay, let me take a step backward...
Right after that fun retreat where Zeus' team won, we were given a three-day break in school so that we have the chance to prepare for our graduation. Everything's well, I was super duper happy when sir Ritz Pineda gave me a piece of paper that contains my salutatory speech. Zeus is our batch's valedictorian and sadly, Audrey was kicked off the valedictory spot. She congratulated us, she was very happy to know that and she didn't complain about her ranking, but something came off...
We were in Audrey's house because Tita Del, Audrey's mom, invited us to have dinner with them to congratulate us on our success. She even embraced every one of us. But when Governor Marlon Del Mundo came inside their lovely home the aura became perplexed.
"D-Daddy." It was Audrey who greeted her dad in the living room as she kissed her dad's cheeks. We only bowed our heads a little because he didn't want any form of greetings from us ever since we started coming here.
"What? What's with the people here?" the governor asked, throwing us his strict look.
"Nag-top three ang anak natin," Tita Del announced as she placed her hand on Audrey's shoulders. "She's so intelligent! Manang-mana siya sa 'yo, Marlon," Tita Del said like she is the proudest mother in the world. Well I know that a mother like her is proud whenever her child achieves something.
"Top three?" Gov asked with a straight face. "Top three lang? I thought you're running for the first spot? Anong nangyari?" I can see how Audrey fears her dad, lalapit na sana ako pero hinila ako ni Zeus. He shook his head.
"M-Medyo mababa po ako sa science, D-Dad."
"I told you to study it! Sayang lamang ang pera na tinatrabaho ko mapag-aral ka lamang pero hindi ka naman nag-aaral nang mabuti!" My eyes widened as I witnessed how her father got mad.
"Marlon, stop it. Top three si Audrey, at 'wag dito, kaharap niya ang mga kaibigan niya---"
"So what? Top three is not enough, Delilah. Top three, seriously?! Napakababa!" Governor glared at Audrey. "Sino ang naging salutatorian at valedictorian?" Governor looked at us, giving me some panic attacks by the way he stares at us.
"S-Salutatorian po s-si B-Brey, v-valedictorian si Z-Zeus..." Audrey said. She's obviously scared of her dad because she's stuttering like that which is not usual.
"Huh, 'yan kinahuhumalingan mo?" Governor Del Mundo scoffed as he returned his gaze to Audrey. "Maybe you intentionally failed the science subject to give him his satisfaction, huh?" I looked at Zeus, I saw his fist clenching but his face looked normal. I could see the rage in his eyes.
"With all due respect, Sir. Love has no place in grading system, it is not included in the rubrics of grades, and it isn't a forbidden rule to attain high grades. Kaya po 'wag niyong sisihin ang kaibigan namin sa isang bagay na hindi naman niya kasalanan talaga. Maaaring nagkulang siya, pero kahit kailan ay hindi siya nagparaya para sa akin kung 'yan ho ang iniisip niyo," Zeus butted in.
He raised a good point causing the mad governor to become madder.
"You have no right to judge the way I discipline my daughter!" he shouted while pointing at Zeus. Audrey held his arm pero tinabig lang siya nito.
