Luke was ignoring me.
After Rylan's big scene in English, Luke didn't even try to talk to me much less look at me. Usually, he would always sneak notes or glances at me during class but nothing happened. At first, I thought it was because he was just busy concentrating but my suspicions about him ignoring me were confirmed when he rushed out of English without me.
On the way out, I almost knocked into one of Rylan's friends, Calum Hood, but he held out the door for me. I never really spoke to Calum, but we did have two or three classes together, but we never made the effort to talk to each other.
Partly because I was a loser and he was one of the most popular people in school. Yet, unlike most of Rylan's friends Calum never participated in teasing me which was sort of nice.
"Luke! Luke! Wait up!" My feet dogged the passing student.
"Watch it, fatty!" One of the basketball players, shoved me. I could have landed on the floor but someone caught me.
Luke's arm carefully guided me up while he glared down the guy. Due to Luke towering over him, he was pretty intimidated and ran away as if Luke was about to beat him down. Little did he know, Luke's the type to not even hurt a fly.
"Are you okay?" He checked me for any bruises or cuts that would magically appear.
"I'm fine." I shook my hair out of my face.
"Good." He mumbled and then was off again.
I sighed, today was going to be a long day.
...
"Luke can you please stop avoiding me please?" I was ready to get down on my knees if that's what it would take for him to even utter a word to me.
All day, Luke had refused to speak to me. Even though he would still walk with me or stay with me at lunch, he never said anything. And although I tried many, and I mean many times to get him to talk, he wouldn't budge.
The bell had rung and since my car wasn't working in the morning and I refused to ride with Lea, we were forced to walk to my step mother's house.
"I don't even understand what I did. Luke please just say one word. Anything. Please, I'm sorry for being so clingy but you're my friend, maybe even my best friend." I rambled, ready to pour out an unprepared speech.
"Cayden."
"You literally mean so much to me and I don't want to lose you to something I don't even know what I did and-"
"Cayden."
On the verge of tears, I still was ranting, "I know I'm being to0 dramatic but-"
"Cayden, sweeheart." He grabbed my hands resulting in me shutting my mouth.
"I'm not mad." I was about to say something but he cut me off, "Anymore."
"Why were you upset with me earlier?" I sniffled, holding back from crying.
"I wasn't upset at you sweetheart, I could never be. I was just well I was just jealous with what happened with you and Rylan during class."
"What? Why?"
"I-I I can't really explain it yet."
"Oh."
"Yeah. I'm sorry sweetheart. Forgive me?" He held up my hands with an adorable expression. One with crinkles near his shining blue eyes. Even in the drab of Washington, his eyes could light up anything and everything.
"Of course I forgive you. Just never do that again please."
"Deal." He swung our connected hands together while we continued to walk.
"Did you really mean it?" He questioned.
"Mean what?"
"That I'm your best friend?"
I nodded, "Of course Luke."
"Good, you're my best friend too." He smiled and I grinned back. Something about me being his best friend made me feel warm inside.
The sky was becoming darker by the minute and it wasn't long before it began to sprinkle.
Yet, we continued walking in the same pace, "I think-um I think I can raise my math grade up, you know for NYU."
"I think you can too." He agreed. "Just got to work hard."
"Yeah, but I'm excited but nervous at the same time." I stated.
"That's okay. That's when you know its worth the risk." He reassured. The sprinkling suddenly turned into hard rain.
"Let's run?" He suggested and I took off with him trailing.
A couple of times, I almost tripped but thankfully Luke made sure I didn't. By the time we reached the door to the house, we were soaked and laughing at our messed up appearances.
But all that stopped once I opened the door. Silvia was seating on one of the seats in the living room, her legs and arms crossed. Her tone sent shivers up and down my spine.
"Cayden, we need to talk."
