It was a glaring, obvious factor that the house on 32 Maple Street was small; small enough that it was only supposed to fit two people, that being my stepmother Silvia and her daughter, Lea.
"Welcome Cayden!" Silvia greeted us while my uncle took out my bare belongings from the trunk.
Silvia Winston was the kind of person who was constantly perky and happy. She was the cheerleader who had the permanent hurting smile and peppy spirit. In fact actually, she was a cheerleader, probably not too long ago due to her age.
My father and her had meet on a business trip a couple of years ago and not even two years into dating did my father ask for her hand in marriage.
I never really enjoyed Silvia's presence, there was always something off I felt about her. Maybe it was the fact that she was trying to replace my mother's spot that I found her the upmost irritating and ever since my father's death, my annoyance toward her has increased by tenfold.
After all, Silvia and Lea didn't attend my father'a funeral because Silvia claimed it was "terrible luck" and "disturbed the aurora of the home".
"Silvia." My uncle acknowledged and I just gave her a trace of a smile. I never knew if my uncle even liked Silvia. At times he barely said a word to her but it seemed as though he approved of her, after all she apparently made my father really happy.
Silvia tried to hug me but I dodged her attempt. I ignored the eminent sigh that escaped her mouth, and allowed her to guide us toward my new room. But from the looks of it, the so called room used to be a closet.
"I'm sorry about the size but it will be fairly comfortable." She tried to make up for it, nipping at her long straight blonde hair.
My uncle set down my belongings and dusted off his hands. "I'm sure Cay will make the best of it."
I nodded in agreement, I wouldn't need a whole a lot and even if there was more it would make me feel even lonelier.
"Where's Lea?" My uncle asked, setting himself on the creaking bed. The light of the room enhanced his dark circles under his deep blue eyes. By the looks of it, he hadn't shaved for a few months and the once energetic smile was replaced by a tired pout.
"She's studying away." My new guardian stated with a hint of pride. Silvia always loved to brag about her daughter wether it was in athletics or making student counsel, there was always something new that Lea was accelerating at.
Lea was the type to be number one, always have been and will be. Whether it was in academics, sports, or even wearing the latest brands Lea always had to come out on top. She detested competition and unfortunately throughout the few times we spent to together, it was clear she saw me as opposition.
As my step mother left to finish dinner preparations, my uncle decided it was his time to flee as well, I didn't blame him. No one took the news of my father's death well, especially my uncle. Once he received word my father was in the hospital, he flew out right away and spent endless nights just waiting and waiting in the bitter hospital room.
My uncle buried me in his arms one last time, "Good luck kiddo. If you ever need me, I'm one call away."
"Thanks uncle." I quietly whispered, "I'm going to need it."
