A cracked eye

Steven asks Pip what happened to her eye.

On the way back to Earth, White and Steven explained what had happened. The Pearls had been told the same lie as everyone else on homeworld, so they were definitely... shocked.

White kept a close eye on Pip, but also made sure to keep her distance. She read Pip's mind. Pip was not very comfortable around her. White couldn't blame her, so she respected her space.

When they arrived on Earth, Blue and Yellow insisted on touring their Pearls around beach city before they went off on their adventure. This left Pip, Steven, and White alone at the beach house.

"As much as I enjoy being in Space, it feels good to be back," White said as she entered the beach house. "Pearl?"

"Coming," Pip said, walking in.

Steven immediately grabbed some clothes. "I'll be back, I'm gonna change out of this zoo outfit!!" He ran into the bathroom.

White and Pip were alone.

"So... is he Pink?" Pip asked.

"Not exactly," White said. "Pink gave up her physical form to give birth to him. No one knows if Pink is still in his gem. No one knows if she can see through Steven's eyes. I do wonder if she can though, or if she's really gone..." She sighed. "Again, I'm so sorry for controlling you. I just... wanted to punish Pink for cracking your eye."

Pip was silent for a moment. She had never seen White like this before. "It's... it's alright."

"Hi guys!!" Steven ran out of the bathroom in a fresh set of clothes. "So, Pip, you enjoying Earth so far?"

"I am, thank you," Pip said, smiling.

"Pip?" White asked curiously.

"It's a nickname," Steven said. "Y'know, Pink, Pearl, Pink Pearl, Pip!!"

"Ah," White nodded.

"Oh!! I've been meaning to ask. How did you crack your eye?" Steven asked suddenly.

Pip stopped for a second. "Well-"

"Steven, I don't know if she's comfortable telling that story right now," White interrupted.

"Oh no no no, it's ok!!" Pip said. "So Pink had been begging for a colony for years now, and Blue and Yellow kept saying no. So she went to White, and of course, she said no and well, that set her off," Pip said, her tone of voice disturbingly cheery.

"Set her off? What do you- ...Mom, did that to you?" Steven froze in horror.

"She didn't mean to!! I just happened to be standing too close," Pip said.

"W-well, if she didn't mean it, why didn't she heal you?" Steven asked nervously.

"She couldn't," White said. "I saw it myself. The damage to Pip's eye was so severe that no amount of healing tears could fix it. The horror on Pink's face when she realized this..." White took a deep breath. "I didn't care at the time. I didn't think Pink was capable of even having Pip as a Pearl, so I did what at the time I thought was for the best, and took Pip away from her." She sighed. "I should've handled the situation better, but I didn't..."

Pip and Steven were silent for a moment. Suddenly, the door to the beach house opened. It was Yellow and Blue.

"Well, our Pearls are off to explore the world!!" Yellow said cheerfully. "Now how about we..." She and Blue both stopped when they saw the somber expressions on the faces of White, Steven, and Pip.

"...Are we interrupting something?" Blue asked.

"Oh no, you both can come in," White insisted, putting on a fake smile.

"So she told Steven what happened to her eye," Yellow looked at White.

The diamonds were in the bubble room, sitting in a circle.

"She did, yes," White said. "I saw Steven's face. He was... horrified that Pink would do such a thing."

"No one's perfect," Yellow said. "Steven's managed to forgive the three of us for the multitude of atrocities we've committed. I'm sure Steven will be able to forgive Pink for this eventually."

"I do worry, though," Blue said. "There are likely many things Pink has done that even we don't know about. He's lucky Pink Pearl is so... dismissive. There are likely other gems who are much angrier at Pink than she is, and may try to hurt Steven."

"Like Jasper," Yellow said.

It was silent for a moment. White then looked up to see Jasper's bubble floating above her.

"That Jasper was made here on Earth," White said. "I could tell just from looking at her. That means she belonged to Pink at one point. She was angry that Pink faked her shattering, but from what it seemed, she respected Pink. I can only assume this means Jasper fought alongside her in the rebellion. She must've escaped before the corruption blast."

"We could ask her, she's right there," Yellow said. "But we all saw how dangerous she was."

"Before we even think about releasing Jasper from that bubble, we should check on Steven and Pink Pearl," White said.

The Diamonds exited the temple to see Steven and Pip on the couch. Steven seemed to be showing her a photo album.

"And this is when I was 5!!" Steven said. "Dad convinced Blue to try food for the first time, and got a picture of her reaction."

Pip chuckled. "That's so funny!"

"Pearl," White said, walking over with Blue and Yellow. Pip and Steven looked over. "While you're welcome to stay as long as you want, I do ask if you have any plans to explore Earth or beyond?"

Pip thought for a moment. "I'd like to stay in this city. Maybe I can find a building to live in."

"Well, until you do, you are welcome to stay here," White said.

"Oh!! I know just the place!!" Steven said.

Connie wasn't expecting Steven over today, so she was definitely surprised to not only see him at her front door, but see he had brought a friend.

"Hi, Connie!!" Steven smiled. "I'd like you to meet Pink Pearl!! Pip for short."

"Oh, hi!!" Connie smiled. "What brings you guys here?"

"Pip's looking for a place to stay for a while," Steven said. "And I thought she would like to stay with you. Would that be ok?"

"Uhh, I'll ask my parents," Connie said, running into the kitchen. About a couple seconds later, she returned with Doug and Priyanka.

After hesitantly letting Steven and Pip in, Steven explained the situation to the Mahashwarens. Priyanka seemed to be more focused on the giant crack on Pip's face than whatever Steven was saying.

Before she could ask how that happened, Steven explained it too, Pip chiming in when she felt like she needed to.

"So basically she was your mom's slave, and she accidentally hurt her, and then White controlled her for 8000 years," Connie repeated.

"Not a good way to look at it, but yea, basically," Steven said.

"We'll take her in," Priyanka said. "Pip, would you be willing to help me study Gems?"

"Sure!" Pip said, smiling.

Steven went home that day feeling confident that Pip was in the right hands and would never be hurt again.
