Greg tells the story of a certain snowy night.

——

"It's amazing. The snow just keeps falling and falling! I'm glad you're staying here with us, Dad." Steven said as he looked out at the snow.

"Yeah, me too buddy. It's way too cold to stay in the van during this blizzard. Besides, the heater in the van hasn't worked since I got that sweet mini disk player installed. Which I do not regret." Greg said.

"I've never seen it snow like this before." Steven said.

"That's not entirely true," White said.

"Really?" Steven turned to her.

"You mean back when-" She laughed. "That was about fourteen years ago. There was a snowstorm happening just like this around then."

"Fourteen years... Hey, I'm fourteen years!" Steven said.

"That's right, little man. You were only a few months old and it was snowing so hard, I thought we were going to become 'Snowman' and 'Snowman Jr., son of Snowman'." Greg said. "But Vidalia was out of town visiting family, so she let us crash at her place for a while. The Diamonds wanted you to stay with them, but I insisted that I keep you somewhere warm."

"That was a good call," Yellow said. "Oh wow, I can't believe how little we knew about Earth back then..."

===

Greg was sleeping on Vidalia's couch with an infant Steven in his arms. He then started crying and struggling in his swaddle, which woke up Greg.

"Hey, schtu-ball. You doing a lot of dancing in there. You wanna get out of there and show me your moves?" Greg chuckled. He then saw that Steven's onesie was unbuttoned. "Hey now. You unbuttoned all your buttons I buttoned up."

He blew a raspberry at Steven, causing him to laugh. "Let's get you buttoned back up." Greg buttoned him back up. "Ookie pookie. There."

Steven then unbuttoned his onesie again, exposing the diamond embedded in his body.

"Huh- What? Does your... gem need to breathe?" Greg wondered. "Hmm... How about... this?" He buttoned up only the top parts of the onesie. Steven cooed in delight.

Suddenly, he heard a knock on the door. Greg got up and went to open it, and found the Diamonds at the door.

"Greetings, Greg Universe," White said cheerfully. "We are here to grace you with a visit."

"Oh!! Uhh, ok," Greg said. "Come in."

The Diamonds entered the house. Greg was still pretty uneasy around them.

"So!!" White clasped her hands together, looking at Greg. "This is a very interesting building you are in."

"It's... Vidalia's House," Greg said.

"Who?" White looked at him.

"...Nevermind," Greg sat down on the couch. "So, uhh, there's supposed to be a blizzard coming soon. Do you guys want to stay here?"

"What's a blizzard?" Yellow asked.

"Uhh, like, you know what snow is?" Greg asked.

"Yes. That is water vapor frozen into ice crystals," Yellow said.

"Well, when it's cold, it can fall from the sky," Greg said. "And if there's a lot of it, it's a blizzard."

"Ah, understood," Yellow said.

"We would love to stay with you until this 'blizzard' ends!!" Blue said cheerfully. "Now how's our little Diamond?"

"H-He's doing great," Greg said. "Definitely a handful, but that's expected for any baby."

"He's grown since we last saw him," Yellow said. "When should we expect him to reach full size?"

"I guess, uhh, in 18 years?" Greg shrugged.

"Oh, that's no time at all!!" Yellow said. "So, remind me of the name you and Pink chose for this being?"

"Steven," Greg said.

"Ah, of course," Yellow nodded.

"Steven. Stee-Von?" Blue pronounced. She laughed lightheartedly. "Such a silly name!! You're so creative, Pink."

"He's not Pink, she told you that, didn't she?" Greg reminded.

"Of course," Blue nodded.

Steven giggled, reaching up at Greg. Greg chuckled. "Pink would've loved him, that's for sure." He looked outside. "Oh!! Looks like it's starting to snow!!"

"Hm?" The diamonds looked out the window, and saw snowflakes begin to fall from the sky.

White walked over to the window. "How interesting. This is like your 'rain'. It's quite... beautiful."

"Yea, snow is pretty nice lookin'." Greg said. "Do you guys have weather on Homeworld?"

"No," White said. "We don't."

===

It was getting pretty nasty out. At this point, going outside was out of the question. The Diamonds were in the kitchen discussing stars knows what. Greg was reading a magazine while Steven slept.

Eventually, the Diamonds came out of the kitchen. Greg looked over. "You guys were in there for a while."

"We were talking," Yellow said. "We... want to learn more."

"Learn more? About what?" Greg asked.

"Humans, Earth, everything," White said. "We want to understand. Maybe then we'll understand why Pink chose to do this."

Greg smiled. "Well that's a start. Here, come sit with us."

The Diamonds hesitantly walked over to the couch. Yellow and Blue sat on opposite sides of Greg while White sat on the table in front of them.

"He looks so peaceful..." Blue said. "Is he doing this 'sleep' activity organics must perform?"

"Yea, he's sleeping," Greg said. He smiled. "Y'know, Pink liked to sleep sometimes too."

"Oh really?" White looked at him in surprise.

"Yea!" Greg said. "We would sleep together sometimes too. It was... nice."

White reached down, gently running a finger across Steven's gem. "Pink, if you're in there, we miss you," She said. "But... if you want to be in this human, that's fine too. We hope we'll understand you better."

Suddenly, Steven's gem began to glow. White pulled her hand back in shock as everyone stared for a moment.

"What the?!" Greg gasped.

"Pink," Blue clasped her hands over her mouth.

"Did she... hear us?" Yellow asked.

"I don't know," White said. "Pink? Glow again if you can hear us."

Nothing happened.

White sighed. "Either she doesn't want to talk to us or... she's really gone."

"That's alright," Greg said. "What matters is that she's a part of Steven now, and that was her choice."

===

"Wow," Steven said. "So was that the first time my gem glowed?"

"From what we know, yes," Blue said. "We've learned so much since then. About humans, about Earth, everything."

"Before then, we found organics... repulsive," Yellow said. "But we've learned that's not the case, and organics are very interesting. They change and grow, something that's not natural to gems. This planet helped change that for us."

"There's nothing in the universe that could change our minds now," White said. "We love you, Steven."

"I love you too," Steven said, smiling.

——

I did consider having White ripping out/almost ripping out his gem, but I wanted to keep this chapter lighthearted.
