Karen POV
After my daughter, Nancy, my son, Micheal and youngest daughter, Holly, go to their rooms to sleep. I hear the phone ringing, I go over to the kitchen to answer it. I pick up the phone and hear
???- hey is this Karen Wheeler?
Who could be calling at this time of day? Not even day, it's late
Me- uhm, yes this is. Who is this?
???- it's Melanie from high school, remember?
Her voice does sound familiar. I REMEMBER NOW!
Me- ohhh heyy. What a surprise hehe
Melanie- yeah I just wanted to reach out to you and say merry Christmas Eve
Me- aw thank you. Same to you. How've you been?
Melanie- I've been good. Ya know besides not being able to have kids and all
Oh yeah I remember her story. Freshman year, her parents told her that she wouldn't be able to have kids because it always skip a generation
Me- ohh, right. How's that been? Will you adopt a kid or?
Melanie- oh about that. Me and my husband yeah want kids.. but the weirdest thing happened tonight. I found this girl alone. She doesn't have family and she looks like she's been held somewhere. She just says bad place. She's staying with me until I figure out where she came from
Me- poor thing. How old is she?
Melanie- 14. She says she's been running from bad things.
Me- wow. I have a son that's 14 as well. Where do you live since you moved
Melanie- yeah in junior year we moved to North Carolina
Me- wow.. that's a long way from here
Melanie- wait you're still in Hawkins?
   She sounds surprised
Me- heh yeah
Melanie- psh girl you need to get out more hah
She giggles. To be honest, it would be nice to travel somewhere
Me- yeah I do. So much has happened in the past 3years I'm sure my family needs a break
Melanie- we should catch up more
Me- yeah. Yeah I'd like that. Anyway, tell me about the girl. Do you think Olly would consider?
Melanie- who knows.. we've been looking too. I feel bad though cause this girl.. she's real skinny. I'm letting her eat up. She doesn't seem to know much either so wherever she was, they did not teach her stuff or something..
Me- what does she look like? Maybe I can help you find her home
Melanie- she's real pale, dark brown hair, and blue-ish grey eyes
Me- I will ask around even though you're quite far from here
Melanie- thanks yeah.
I feel a tap on my shoulder
Me- hold on a second please, Melanie
Melanie- ok
I turn around and see Nancy. She looks really tired but also has puffy eyes. Has she been crying?
Nancy- mom?
She says quietly because it sounds like she's about to cry
Me- oh what is it, Nancy?
I hug her as I still have the phone in my arm. She slowly hugs back
Me- what's wrong, sweetie?
Nancy- mom, do you know what's going on with Mike?
Me- i mean it's his last year in middle school but besides that not. Why, did something happened to him?
Nancy- no.. we just lost someone though
Me- oh sweetie what do you mean? Lost who?
Nancy- a friend.. we miss her, mom
Me- it's ok sweetie. Talk to me about it in a minute. Head up to your room and we'll talk there
We let go and she nods. She heads back upstairs and I get back on the phone with Melanie
Me- hey sorry about that. I'm gonna to have to talk to you later. Something came up. I'm sorry
Melanie- oh that's alright. I understand. We'll talk tomorrow?
I do miss talking to her.. she was my friend through grade and high school, well until she moved after sophomore year
Me- yes definitely. Nice hearing from you again
Melanie- same. Have a good night
Me- you too
I say smiling while I hang up the phone. I turn off all the lights on the first floor. I walk up stairs and head to Nancy's room. I walk inside her room and she's sitting on her bed
Me- so tell me what happened, Nance
Nancy- I cant tell you because it's not my place. But I just want to let you know things are going to be different. Mike and I will need time alone..
She says worrying me, I knit my eyebrows looking at her
Me- what's going on?
Nancy- just something mom. You have to trust me on this one
Me- Nancy if it's something serious I need to know about then tell me. You can tell me anything
Nancy- it's alright, mom.
Me- ...fine but if anything serious happens, no more secrets. I've let you off the hook too many times, Nancy. This is your last chance, please make sure everything is alright with him please
She gives me a small smile and nod. While I'm leaving her room, I close the door.
