We file into the dining room where Gordon waits for us, looking dashing as the spotlight radiates down on him and illuminates his crisp white Head Chef jacket. Two of us are going to earn jackets just like his by the end of today... I can't wait to put mine on.
"Good evening, everyone!" Gordon says cheerily. "Take a look behind you at the former blue kitchen."
We turn to face the blue kitchen. A large red curtain obscures it, and Sous Chef Christina stands smiling by one end holding a golden rope, ready to pull the curtain back.
"Tonight, you will face the hardest competition yet." Chef Ramsay bounces excitedly. "Christina, please do the honors?"
Christina nods and pulls the curtain back, revealing the blue kitchen staffed with three crew members. Once Christina fully draws the curtain, she takes up the front.
"Chef Christina and three of her hand-selected best cooks from Gordon Ramsay Steak will face off versus the four of you working as a team. I'll start as your Head Chef, then I'll call one of you up when we're on appetizers and Sous Chef Scott will cover your station while you take the Head Chef position for a while before switching out. No tricks this time. This is all to see how well you do being in the driver's seat."
I nervously clench my hands into fists. Watching Christina's cooks when we were sitting at the Chef's table made them look like a perfect team. Meanwhile, I know that our team still has some growing to do before we'll be nearly as fluid as they are.
"Service starts in thirty minutes. After appetizers, the three of you that aren't acting as Head Chef will have to cover for each other as you get called up." He rubs his hands together, surveying us.
"So go decide on stations and make sure you have everything you'll need, but don't expect to stay at your favorite station as you'll switch out through the night. We'll be serving our standard menu and I expect everything to come out perfectly. This will be your fourteenth dinner service–you've had ample time to learn, yeah?"
"Yes, Chef!" We shout.
"Good, then get a move on!" He claps and waves us towards the kitchen. We head in together, grouping up at the front.
"We should each get our favorite station, so we have the best chance of staying on it for the longest," Taylor starts. "Apps and fish are gonna be important at the start."
"I can do apps!" Bella says, her hand shooting up.
"Are you sure? Starting on apps means you get a lot of work right at the beginning," Abel warns.
"Yeah, I'm sure," Bella reaffirms. "I told you guys I'm going to show off how much better I am than you, and this is how I can prove it to Chef Ramsay," she says, nodding once.
"Well, if you need any help, let me know," Taylor says.
"I won't, but thanks," Bella says, flipping her hair and heading toward her station, evidently thinking she doesn't need to participate in the conversation any longer.
Taylor struggles to resist rolling her eyes, and Abel picks up from where Tay left off. "So that leaves meat, garnish, and fish. (Y/N), you should do fish."
"You think so?" I ask. I had been wanting the fish station, but I didn't want to steal it from anyone.
"I know so. Judging by the food you've made in the past, you've the golden touch with seafood. I'd much prefer you be on that station early, especially when we'll need your scallops for apps," he responds.
