My Demons by Starset

Mayday! Mayday!
The ship is slowly sinking.
They think I'm crazy but they don't know the feeling.
They're all around me, circling like vultures.
They wanna break me and wash away all my colors. Wash away my colors.

Take me high and I'll sing.
Oh, you make everything okay, okay, okay.
We are one in the same. Oh, you take all the pain away, away, away.
Save me if I become my demons.

I cannot stop this sickness from taking over. It takes control and drags me into nowhere.
I need your help, I can't fight this forever.
I know you're watching, I can feel you out there.

Take me high and I'll sing.
Oh, you make everything okay, okay, okay.
We are one in the same. Oh, you take all the pain away, away, away.
Save me if I become my demons.

Take me over the walls below, fly forever.
Don't let me go.
I need a savior to heal my pain. When I become my worst enemy. The enemy.

Take me high and I'll sing.
You make everything okay.
We are one in the same.  You take all the pain away.

Take me high and I'll sing.
Oh, you make everything okay, okay, okay.
We are one in the same. Oh, you take all the pain away, away, away.
Save me if I become my demons.

Himiko's pov.

Whenever I woke up, I took my time getting up. I leisurely pack my bag and climb down the tall tree. The sun had dropped to the horizon, turning the sky into a warm pink and orange. There was a faint chill in the air, promising an even colder night. I pull on my cloak, wrapping it tightly around myself. I take my mask from my bag, running my hand along it's lioness features. It was beautiful, intricately carved and painted. I smile slightly, tying in mover my face. I pop my hood up and start to make my journey.

Running through dense woods at night with no light was just as fun as it sounds, maybe even a little more. That is, if I wasn't terrified if the dark. I spent my entire journey with my hackles up, keeping my eyes, as well as my ears, wide open. After an hour or two, the stars had risen in the sky and provided just enough light to see a couple feet in front of me.

I take a break along my path, pulling out my compass to make sure I was moving in the right direction. I watched as the arm wiggle a bit, then eventually points me north. I grin at it, celebrating my small victory of being able to stay on course.
I slide the compass back into my pocket and freeze, hearing a small stick snap a dozen or so yards away. My eyes lift up quickly, searching the area with a great intensity. I trail the flash of a body, moving quickly as I dodge a kunai flying at me. I spring into the air, taking a deep breath of air.
"Kanton Haisekisho! Fire style: Burning ash!" I yell, a huge cloud of explosive powder surrounding the area where the kunai came from. Within less than a half second, I ignite the flame, setting off a huge explosion. A hot wave heats up my skin and my eyes scan the embers for my attacker.
"That will not work on me...." A deep voice purrs, coming from behind me. I quickly flip around, sending several kunai in their direction. A dark figure moves to dodge them but, just as they stick to a tree, the explosive tags set off and create another explosion. Shadows curl around the man, demanding my attention. When I take in the sight of him, my heart stutters a little. This man was not human, at least not anymore. His eyes were reversed, black were white should be. His dull green pupils glowed in the darkness, pools of hate and rage.
"Who are you?" I ask, my right hand resting above my shuriken holster and my left raised in a offensive manor. The man regards me quietly at first, taking in my appearance.
"I am Kakuzu..." His voice ran chills up my spine, setting my entire core in edge. "And you?"
"Mai." I answer instantly, sending up a prayer that he'd believe me. He nods once, tossing an item of clothing off into the darkness. This revealed multiple sets of stitches along his arms and two black bands above each wrist. My blood ran cold, my body telling me that this man, Kakuzu, he was dangerous... And I had to figure out how to deal with him.
"Mai...." He draws out his voice and I resist the erge to shiver as his chaotic voice runs it's journey through my ears. "How strong is your heart?"
". . ." I ponder the question for a second, bouncing on my heels a couple of times. "Broken."
"It is fragile?" Kakuzu asks, standing as still as a statue in front of me. I disregard his question, knowing that the answer was obvious. His eyes hold no exspression, but I could tell that he was humored by my response. "How long will it take me to destroy it all together?"
"I would say around..." I shrug, "Maybe a word or two."
"You are humorous." He points out blandly, "Even in truth, you mock yourself. What game are you playing?"
"I thought perhaps I should play myself down." I tell him honestly, standing tall. "Give myself the advantage of the surprise."
"Nothing you do will surprise me." He informs me, sinking into a fighting position. "I've lived longer than you'd ever know. I've seen enough to know even more."
"Then today may be the day that will change." I tell him, my mask making my voice sound a little hollow. I couldn't see any weapons on him and he held himself like he was going to attack me with Taijutsu. His body flickers away and I quickly move, dodging a huge blow. A tree splinters from the impact and I kick off of another one, tossing a kunai with a special formula on it, with it's twin in my other hand. The kunai sticks to a tree above Kakuzu and it's twin was teleported with a bright flash, detonating an explosive. The tree breaks in half and Kakuzu lunges at me from the flame.
