When I woke up the next morning, Kakashi was gone. The spot next to me was empty, cold. I got out of bed slowly, rubbing my eyes. I slept well, not at all like I have been. I stand up and stretch my arms, lifting them far in the air. I walk to my bathroom and brush my teeth and wash my face, pulling my hair in a messy bun. Whenever I make my way towards the living room, I could hear the sounds of talking and banging of pots and pans. I walk a little faster, turning the corner.
My chest gets heavy when I see my boys all working together to make breakfast. Naruto was viciously beating eggs in a bowl while Sasuke carefully cut up some vegetables, including spinach and tomatoes. Kakashi stood leaning against the counter, instructing the boys what to do next. They were so busy with their work, they didn't notice me watching. I carefully approach Kakashi, wrapping my arms tightly around his waist. He looks down at me and smiles, quickly returning my embrace. His fingers brush quickly along my cheek, a ghost of a touch. I lean gently against his touch, smiling softly as he looks down at me. His eyes were full of worry. I could tell he was trying to figure out what I am thinking or how I'm feeling... To be honest, I don't even know the answers to either of those questions."What are you guys making?" I ask, pulling away from Kakashi's arms. Naruto whips around, grinning at me widely.
"We're making you breakfast!" He beams, spilling a little egg on the counter. Sasuke tsks, quickly wiping it up.
"She's not blind, baka." Sasuke looks up at me, eyes a perfect imitation of Kakashi's. "We're making omletts."
"You guys are so sweet!" I laugh, ruffling their hair. "I'll have to make it up to you, huh?"
"Naw! We're just trying to make you hap-"
"You don't have to do anything, Himi. We're just saying thanks for healing us yesterday." Sasuke interups, elbowing Naruto in his ribs. Naruto yells in pain and they glare at each other. I quickly defuse the situation by laughing, gathering their attention back to me.
"Thanks, boys." I say, honestly. "This means a lot to me."
"Sure, Himi!" Naruto poses, giving me a thumbs up. "You're the best! Believe it!"
"It's nothing, really." Sasuke says, simply.By the time food was on the table, it was gone. Naruto and Sasuke ate quickly, like they were starving. I watch them mesmerized, slowly eating my own omlett. Whenever they finished, they stood up and cleaned the food off the table and cleaned their mess in the kitchen. I watched from the living room, still dressed in my pajamas. Kakashi helps, helping the boys with the dishes. Whenever they finish, they decided to go out in train.
"I'll see you later, Himi!" Naruto hugs me before he leaves, "Believe it!"
"Get stronger, Ruto!" I call out, waving at him as he leaves.
"I'm going to head out too." Sasuke says, quickly giving me a hug. "I'm going to check on my house and train some."
"Be careful." I say, ruffling his hair gently. Sasuke nods and disappears out of the door."Hmm." I hum, bouncing on my heels.
"Do you want to talk about last night, Himiko?" Kakashi asks, sitting on the couch. He was wearing his uniform, so he must have went home to get dressed. I freeze for a split second and then shrug.
"If you would like to."
". . ." Kakashi's eyes stay glued to mine as I sit next to him on the couch. "Himiko, I... I shouldn't have stayed here last night." I sit silently for a second, having already expected him to say this.
"I know."
"It's not that... It just..." He was so flustered, stuttering and not able to form sentences. I watch, my heart feeling heavy. He takes a deep breath, looking away from my eyes. "It's just that it felt wrong. Like I took advantage of you."
"It's not like we even did anything, Kakashi." I point out, crossing my arms around myself. Whenever he'd said that, the distance between us felt bigger. His words pushed us further apart, which was his intention. He must have been thinking about this for a while.
"I don't want to take the risk." He says, still looking away. His eyes were anywhere else but me. "It's not appropriate for us to be..."
"For us to be what?" I ask, anger rising in my throat. His eyes filled with regret, but he quickly shook it away.
"We can't be anything more."
". . ." His words stung, deep into my chest. If he would have phased it differently, than I wouldn't feel as hurt... But... It felt as if he carved deep into my chest.
"I... I understand." I whisper, pulling myself off of the couch. Kakashi's eyes follow, hands clenched at his side. Den slept by his side, oblivious to the tense situation around him.
"Himiko, don't misunderstand me." Kakashi says, shaking his head. "I'm not abandoning you. We are still friends. We're just no-"
"We're nothing more." I finish, nodding. I start to walk to my bedroom, stopping at the beginning of my hallway.
"I need someone to look after Den today, I have meetings to attend and a funeral to oversee." I don't look back at him as I talk, keeping my eye on my door to my room.
"I'll keep him for today." Kakashi stands up and I could hear him walking towards the door. "I... I'll see you later, Himiko."
"Goodbye."
