I'd disappeared from Kakashi's apartment before the sun came up. Before I left the village, I left flowers on my brother and my father's graves. It hurt more than anything, to see my family six feet below me. I hated myself with ever step I took leaving the village, and even more after I met back up with Tobi. It'd been a few days since, and we were running another bounty.
I sit on the stump of an old tree that had long since fallen over. I kick my feet as I wait, eyes scanning the seemingly empty forest. It was dark now, the sun under the tree line. It was perfect to use the shadows as our cover. I glance at the abandoned shack sort of building beside me, tilting my head as I try to listen for any noise or movements. Tobi had gone to check our surroundings, and he'd blended into the darkness so well I lost track of him.
"Sspp!" I look up quickly at the sound, my eyes landing on Tobi in the distance. He stood behind the shack, putting his gloved finger on his mask to signal to be quiet. He motions to follow him and I nod, sinking down to keep quiet as I make my way to him.
We creep towards the door, Tobi holding his arm out to stop me. I press against the wall, breathing deep and quiet. Tobi couldn't feel the emptiness in my chest, nor could he feel the pressure on my shoulders. If only I could tell him.
He turns to face me and puts his hand on his ear, motioning to the wall. I nod in understanding and press my head against the wall, ear picking up voices inside. They were muffled, but our targets were definitely in there.
I give him a nod, hackles high as we move towards the door. Tobi glances at me to see if I was ready and I nod, grabbing a kunai from my pouch.
"Let's do this..." I whisper giving him a thumbs up, Tobi nodding with a large grin under his orange mask.
"Hello all!" He yells brightly, kicking the door down with one swift motion. I instantly try not to laugh at his greeting. "Tobi hopes he's not interupting something important. Tobi would hate to be rude!" A large group of men look up in unison, a sort of criminal gang. I walk behind Tobi into the warehouse, casually stepping over the broken door.
"Let's make this quick, Tobi." I say, placing a hand on his shoulder with a smile under my mask. "We've got to get to the inn soon."
"Of course, Mai-chan." He says, without turning away from the now angry group of men. We ignore their threats as we continue to talk casually. "Let's skip the part where we exchange names and stories and get to the point. Mai and Tobi need something you have, and we are willing to rip apart your entire gang to get it."
"What the hell do you need?!" A large man with a potbelly and a shirt that was stretched too thin asks, probably their leader. His hair was thinning, basically bald, and a piece of chicken was half raised to his lips.
"We nee-..." Tobi looks back at me, pausing. "What do we need, Mai-chan?"
"We need to collect the bounty on their group." I remind him, smiling at him with a small laugh. "We will have to beat them up regardless. We do need the ring off the leader's finger though, as proof."
"Aye, that sounds familiar." Tobi nods, turning back to the criminals that looks at us with open mouthed, shocked. "Shall we begin, Mai-chan?"
"Sure, Tobi." I say, rolling my shoulders. "I go left, you go right?"
"Count your take downs. Let's make it a competition." He says cheerfully, sprinting forward as I do. He, of course, tripped and fell on his face and I just laugh and flip over him. He did make me feel a little better, my my head was still cloaded. The battle was different than I thought it would be. These weren't average criminals, but Anbu that had been kicked out of their village. Of course, the bounty had forgotten to include that in the discription. I had gotten a few of them down, but I didn't have enough time to see how Tobi was doing. It was bad enough that I didn't haven't head in the game.
I face off to my next opponents, two identical men. They sneer at me, sizing me up.
"Some baby kunoichi? Why do you cover your face?" One asks, voice hard like stone.
"Are you ugly, little kunoichi?" The other asks, voice sharp like a blade. "Or are you covering your face because you're scared?" Their taunts seem to fade together into one nasty voice.
"It's none of your business." I say, lunging at them. I go to grab at the one who spoke first, but his image flickered away under my fingers. I quickly try to move out of the way, but my feet stuck to the ground and I couldn't move. My eyes widen as I look down, my feet stuck in some sort of substance.
My enemy takes this opportunity to lunge at me with their weapons, but I quickly substitute, leaving my shoes behind as they were stuck in the glue. Hands instantly wrap around my neck and I gasp, finding the other twin behind me. He chucks my body to his brother, in which his twin punches my face with all his might.
I hear a horrible crack as I slide across the floor, stumbling as I feel broken glass cut into my feet and legs. Blood steams down my face and throat, my mask in shatters on the ground. My head was foggy from the empact as I reach up and touch my brow, fingers coming back crimson with blood.
"Oh.."
