An incessant knocking at the door woke Alaina up from her impromptu sleeping session. All through last night and the early hours of the morning, she had bawled her eyes out, her only companion being the blue teddy bear which she chucked to the corner.

"Fuck" she cursed under her breath when she opened her eyes.

Who the hell left her blinds open like that?

She groaned as she got out of bed with her head in her hands. She still had the throbbing headache from all the crying she did and now her eyes hurt too.

She looked in mirror as she walked past it and stopped. She looked so horrible.

Her eyes were bloodshot. Her nose was all red and clogged. Her hair was all over the place and her eyes had bags under them. She even still had blood on her elbow from when she scraped it last night.

She put on a pair of shades to hide her eyes and used her hands to smoothen down her hair, making it a bit better.

She opened the door to see Zee standing there, looking down at her feet.

"Hey" Zee started when she noticed Alaina had opened the door a bit. "I overreacted last night and I just want us to talk it out"

"I made breakfast incase you're hungry" She said when she saw Alaina wasn't talking.

"I'm not" she replied, her voice low and Zee frowned.

"Can we talk?"

She opened the door wider and stepped aside, wordlessly inviting Zee in. She came in and Alaina closed the door behind her.

"I just wanna say I'm sorry" Zee said as Alaina sat down on the bed. "Y'know you've been my best friend since I was 9 and you haven't given me any reason not to trust you since we became friends"

"I know" Alaina responded.

"And I wanna say I'm sorry for last night. I know you wouldn't do anything to intentionally hurt me but I wasn't thinking straight last night. You didn't deserve that cuh you was already going through a lot and I made it worse"

"It's fi-"

"No it's not fine. You were crying last night and I wasn't there for you cuh I was too wrapped up in my own petty problems to see that you actually needed me. That was really selfish of me and I'm an idiot"

"No you not. I woulda done the same thing you did"

"We both know that's cap. You always put everybody else's feelings above yours" Zee contradicted.

"I do, don't I?" She agreed. She was too nice. Too fucking friendly. Maybe if she had been a little meaner to Prince, none of this shit woulda went down.

"Hey, don't do that" Zee said, noticing the sadness in the tone of her voice. "Roddy's stupid for leaving you like that". She at down beside her and pulled her into a hug.

"You ont even know what happened"

"But I know you. You wouldn't do nobody dirty. So he's a fool for believing whatever"

"It hurt a lot" Alaina sniffled again, the tears threatening to fall again.

"I know sweetie. I know" Zee cooed, rubbing her back. "Look at me". She grabbed Alaina's face to make her look up.

"Take these damn shades off". She took the glasses off her face and threw them on the bed. "Damn. How long you been crying?"

"Ion- iono"

"Okay...you know what we gon' do?" Zee asked and she shook her head.

"Well you gon' take a shower first. And I'll pick out your outfit. I'll do your hair. And your make-up. I'll have you looking like a fucking princess by the time I'm done with you"

"You don't have to do all this y'know" she said.

"Ion care. I want to. Today's all about making you happy"

"But it's your birthday" Alaina reminded her.

"So?" Zee asked with an eyebrow raised. They stared at  each other for a minute before Alaina smiled a little. She hadn't really been appreciating Zee enough. It was her birthday and here she was, tryna make her best friend feel better.

"I love you Zee"

"Love you too munchkin. Now go take that shower. You kinda stink"

_

"I got sum' for you" Zee told Alaina from the other side of the kitchen counter.

"What?"

"This". She held up a tub of Ben and Jerry's Chocolate Therapy ice cream and smiled as she watched Alaina's eyes light up.

"Oh my God. Where'd you get that?" She asked.

"I been saving it for a while. Figured now would be a perfect time to whip it out. It's yours if you want it"

"Forreal?"

"Yeah. Under one condition tho"

"What?"

"Tell me whatchu been doing with Josh" Zee said and Alaina's small smile dropped.

"Zee I already told you I can't tell you"

"Why not?"

"I made a promise to Josh and I can't break it. You know ion do that"

"I know. But at least gimme a hint"

"Look Zee, can we please stop talking about Josh? If we talk about him then I'll remember last night and if I do that, I'll start thinking about Wayne all over again and I'll be sad again so can we please stop talking about this?" She asked and Zee sighed.

"Yeah sure. Have it". Zee handed her the tub as her phone dinged. She picked it up and checked it.

"It's a text from Josh" she said.

"What it say?"

"Can we meet up somewhere?" She read out loud.

"I'll leave you to it then". Alaina grabbed a spoon and the tub of ice cream as she stood up and headed upstairs.

"Do this got anything to do with you?" Zee asked but she ignored her and walked up the stairs.

"Does he have something for me? Oh my God is it a surprise? A party? Come back and tell me!"

"Happy 21st Zee!" She called as she went into her room. Into a world of ice cream, tears and Drake on repeat.

This was the life.

Note the sarcasm.
