Boxing day is celebrated as the second day of Christmastide. It is said to have originated in the United Kingdom as a holiday to feed the poor and help them, but as time changed, it turned into a shopping holiday.
It is celebrated in a number of countries that were a part of the Britain Empire. Boxing Day is on 26 December but due to bank holidays and national holidays, it is celebrated two or three days later.
In various parts of Europe, such as Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, Poland, Romania and India, Boxing day is celebrated as the second day of Christmas.
The name Boxing day was given because the rich used to box up gifts for the poor and their servants and gift them, not because of sport boxing day, which is sometimes misinterpreted.
In India, Boxing day is celebrated in various ways, some people adopted children from Foster homes, while some may give donations. Being a Colony of the British, India also celebrates the Festival of Boxing Day.
The European Tradition of giving gifts and donating and helping the people in need goes back to the Middle ages but the actual origin of the boxing Day still remains a mystery.
It is sometimes said that it is also the Alms box tradition.
The tradition of Alms box comes from a custom in the Early Christian era where alms boxes placed in the churches which collected special offerings from the church visitors during the Feast which were tied up during the Feast of Saint Stephen in the Western Christian Churches. These donations would later be distributed among the poor and people in need by the customary and deriving the name of Alm box in the Western Churches.
Boxing day came on Sunday, then it was postponed to Monday since Sunday is the day of Worship.
Boxing day is mainly celebrated in the UK, with some people following in the USA.
2020 has been a tough year, but people still are keeping the boxing day cheer up by denoting money to the foster homes and NGOs who are struggling to keep the poor hungerless during the Pandemic
