"When tillage begins, other arts follow. The farmers, therefore, are the founders of human civilization." ~ Daniel Webster
If I am to say that a farmer is a craftsman of the highest order, that will not be an exaggeration. Right?
A farmer is the backbone on which our whole society depends to stand upright. They work day and night to provide us food, but struggle every moment of their lives to earn what rightfully is theirs, a meal twice a day. Therefore, in order to draw attention towards the problems faced by the farmers and to acknowledge their contribution towards the society, National Farmers Day, or popularly known as Kisan Diwas, is celebrated every year on the 23rd day of December, the birth anniversary of India's fifth Prime Minister, Chaudhary Charan Singh.
Chaudhary Charan Singh, often referred to as the 'champion of the peasants', was a leader truly dedicated towards the cause of the farmers. He introduced several policies aiming for welfare of the farmers and played an important role in bringing up the problems faced by small and marginal farmers. He even wrote several books on farmers, the issues they face, and what all can be done to improve their living situations.
He had once said, "The true India resides in its villages."
So, to honor the former Prime Minister, Chaudhary Charan Singh for all the efforts he had put in for the farmers, his birth anniversary is celebrated as 'Kisan Diwas' on 23rd of December every year since 2001.The celebrations on this day include discussions, debates, forums, and quizzes, and aim towards educating people about the issues faced by the farmers, and strengthening the farmers as well by making them aware about the latest agricultural techniques and advancements.
