The seventh day of Navratri, the Saptami Tithi, is dedicated to Maa Kaalratri. Maa Kaalratri is the most fierce form of Maa Durga and is also known as Chandi, Bhadrakali,
Mrityu, Chamumda, Rudrani etc.
Maa Kaalratri is the most worshipped form of Maa Durga. There are many tales associated with Maa Kaalratri but one of the most widely believed facts is that when Shumbha and Nishumbha had captured Dev Lok, Maa Durga sent Chandi to help the Gods. Shumbha and Nishumbha sent Chanda to fight, hence she created Maa Kaalratri to kill them. Then Raktabeej was sent. Everytime Maa killed him, he was resurrected by his spilled blood. Therefore Maa Kaalratri drank his blood. The word Kaal means night/death and Ratri means night. Kaalratri means the Goddess of night or Goddess of death. She encompasses death and destruction.
Maa Kaalratri is dark complexed, with dishevelled hair and three eyes. She rides on a donkey and has four hands. Her lower right hand is in Abhaya Mudra and lower left hand holds a Vajra. Her upper right hand is in Varada Mudra and upper left hand holds a Khadga. She has a
divine light and is considered an eternal source of wisdom.Maa Kaalratri is offered jasmine flowers. As bhog, jaggery or dishes made out of jaggery is offered to her. Worshipping Maa Kaalratri removes darkness from life.
