Diabetes… What exactly is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition that impairs the body’s ability to process blood glucose, otherwise known as blood sugar. It is a chronic disease, which technically means, it is a long-term disease.

Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on 14th November. This date marks the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered Insulin along with Charles Best in 1922.

World Diabetes Day is the prim
ary global awareness campaign focusing on diabetes mellitus. Every year, this campaign focuses on a dedicated and steadfast theme that runs throughout the year.

There are two main goals this crusade strives to excel in:
~It aims to be the platform to stimulate IDF advocacy endeavours throughout the year.
~It hopes to be the Global Driver to emphasize on the importance of taking harmonized and
concerted actions to confront diabetes as a critical global health issue.

Let's talk about the history and origin of this day. It was established in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation, with support from WHO (World Health Organisation). It
was created in growing concerns about the health and economic threats posed by diabetes.

Although created in 1991, it didn't have a specific day to itself. It was on 14 November 2006 when World Diabetes Day became an official UN day.

This year's World Diabetes Day falls during a global pandemic, namely the Coronavirus. This pandemic is dangerous to all but much more hazardous to people with diabetes. Not only do they have a higher risk of catching the virus, but even have huge difficulties in accessing the
right kind of healthcare to help themselves get rid of it.

This pandemic has widened the risks which were already in existence. According to WHO, 6% of the whole world are a target of diabetes. And the fact that this is rising rapidly in
low-income or underdeveloped countries, where the right kind of healthcare cannot be accessed is concerning.

This year, the WHO is announcing the Global Diabetes Compact, an extensive and broad approach to support countries, especially the low-income countries in implementing effective programs and strategies for the prevention, or at least management of diabetes.

Under this Compact, they are planning to bring everything under one package, for better understanding and implementation of it. This time, particular focus will be given on reducing obesity, especially among young people, as obesity is one of the most crucial reasons for
diabetes.

(A few healthy foods to help control diabetes)

How do we control diabetes? One of the very obvious reasons is a healthy lifestyle. You must have heard of this very famous quote, "A healthy mind equals a healthy body". This
statement is as true as it can get. A bit of exercising and some control on the diet can't be very difficult, can it?

As someone said “You can’t control what goes on outside, but you CAN control what
goes on inside.”

As this article comes to an end, we hope you have a very prosperous and productive year, the most and for all, a healthy one.
