The fifth day of Navratri ie. Panchami Tithi is dedicated to worship Skanda Mata, a form of Maa Durga. Skanda Mata is considered as the mother of Lord Kartikeya.
It is believed that Skanda Mata is the mother form of Maa Durga and is very kind and caring. The name Skanda means Kartikeya and Mata means mother. As Kartikeya is also called Skanda, she is referred to as Skanda Mata when she gave birth to Kartikeya. Skanda Mata awards her devotees with power, salvation and prosperity. Anyone who worship Skanda Mata receive two fold blessings as they are even blessed by Lord Skanda, her son. Skanda Mata is also known as "The Goddess Of Fire" because she has the power to protect people from evil powers.
Skanda Mata is four armed and is mounted on a lion. Her lower left hand carries baby Skanda with six heads seated on her lap. Her upper left and right hand holds lotus. Her lower right hand holds Abhaya Mudra. She is also known as Devi Padmasana as she sits inside lotus flower with Skanda.

Skanda Mata appreciates all her devotees and bless them. It is believed that Skanda Mata likes roses and red roses are offered to her.Skanda Mata's favourite fruit is banana. Therefore banana accompanied with other fruits, petha etc are offered to her as bhog.
