India has a variety of festivals. Different religions, different festivals. But there is one festival that bring us together, that proves Unity in Diversity. The day of love, the day of care, the day of protection- Raksha Bandhan, celebrated by every Indian, where religion binds none of us.

Are you wondering what Raksha Bandhan's story is all about?

Why are so many women going crazy every year searching for an ideal band for their brothers?
Well, as you might have envisioned, in Indian history multiple myths mention this festival, each with a similar morality but different contexts.

There are many famous stories behind Rakhi's great festival. But these two stories always cross my mind.

1. DraupadiandKrishna
The most significant story of Indian mythology is plausible that of the wife of the Pandavas, Draupadi and of Lord Krishna. The story went that, as Makar Sankranti treated sugar cane, Krishna cut his little finger. His reigning Empress, Rukmini, sent a servant to get bandages immediately. But, in the meantime, Draupadi, who watched the whole incident, trimmed off a little piece of cloth from her saree and tied to Lord Krishna's finger to stop the bleeding. Overwhelmed with Draupadi's gesture, he pledged, in exchange, to aid her whenever she obliged him. Later in Mahabharata, when Pandavas lost everything including their Wife, Lord Krishna came to her Service and provided her eternal saree during the inglorious disrobing of Draupadi and saves her from the humiliation caused by her husbands.

2. Rani Karnavati and Emperor Humayun
Another famous version of Rakhi 's legacy is that of Rani Karnavati and Emperor Humayun. Karnavati was a Mewar representative after the death of Rana Sanga, her husband. She governed in the name of her eldest son, Vikramjeet. For the second time, Bahadur Shah of Gujarat assaulted Mewar. He had already defeated Vikramjeet. The queen began to seek support from other kingdoms. Initially skittish, the nobles finally agreed to take over the Shah. In the meantime, Karnavati also wrote to Humayun for help. She sent a rakhi to him seeking protection.

Astonishingly, the Mughal emperor was in the midst of another military campaign when he got the call for support. Humayun 's father, Babur, defeated Rana Sanga when it led a Rajput amalgamation army against him in 1527. He turned to Mewar after he abandoned it.

Unfortunately, he never made it on time since the Rajput army in Chittoor was already defeated. And the queen set herself on fire to escape the unworthiness of falling into Bahadur Shah 's hands. Although Shah could not go any further and had to turn away from Chittoor because soon afterwards Mughal military strengthenings arrived. Later,  The kingdom of Humayun was restored to Vikramjit, the son of Karnavati.

Raksha Bandhan is not just a festival of brothers and sisters, It is also a remembrance of a wonderful event which melt one's heart. Its a festival every woman celebrate in a hope that the person whom they are tying a knot of affection would never let them down.

In the same way, the colourful strands of a thread are the reminder of the silent promise every brother made that of love, care and protection.
