Every year, India celebrates September 15 as National Engineer's Day to appreciate the contributions of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, a Bharat Ratna awardee on his birthday. Sir MV, as he was called, was India's first civil engineer, who was a major part in construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara, a dam below the confluence of Kaveri and its tributaries. In his later life, he went on to become Divan of Mysore and later a member of the Board of Directors of Tata Steel.

While in the late 90s and early 2000s, it was a prestige to be called an engineer, now it is a prestige to be an engineer from the NITs or even more if from IITs, due to the sharp hike in number of private engineering colleges. Every year more than a million engineers graduate in India, yet we lack “good” engineers. A “good” engineer is a one who is not just ambitious or curious but someone who can simplify and clarify all he touches, someone who can debug anything, and most importantly never shun even minor suggestions. Hard to find one, right?
