Vijayadashami brings us to the end of the five-day-long festivities of Durga Puja. It is usually marked by the traditional Maa Boron - prepping the Goddess for her journey back to Mount Kailash from her maternity home - with a bittersweet farewell.

After that one, pandits perform arati and apply sindoor on the forehead and feet of the Goddess. Women later smear sindoor (vermillion) on each others’ faces. This is known as Sindoor Khela. Traditionally, Sindoor Khela is meant for married women who follow a set custom while playing Sindoor Khela. However, nowadays the ritual of Sindoor Khela has become more inclusive. Unmarried women, widows and men also bathe themselves in scarlet.

At last, they finally offer sweets to each other as prasad.

A symbolic immersion of Durga declaring the end of the Puja rituals known as ‘bhashan’ or ‘ghat visarjan’
