Hello, my fellow humans. I am a psychology student, and it is a great honour of mine to be able to spread awareness of Mental Health today, especially this year.
Every year, WHO (World Health Organisation) keeps a theme for Mental Health Day, but this year, they have instead of keeping a theme, pledge to invest in Mental Health as a whole. This year has seen many ups and downs, and many crises all over the world.
It is one of the most testing times that humanity has had to face since the second world war. The world is in shambles, and the people have had to deal with all problems alone.
With lockdown implemented all over the world, every human being had been confined to their homes. This has led to many problems.
For one, everyone has grown anxious about being cooped up in their homes. People with no anxiety have developed anxiety, and people already diagnosed with anxiety have had trouble with someone to help them out.
Depression and Dysthymia are at an all-time high. With financial troubles, jobs being cut, no proper instructions for the future, there is uncertainty about the future of everyone, of our loved ones.
On top of all, we have to live with a certain amount of fear for your safety and our physical health as well.
All of this has increased the number of mental health issues this year. So, let's pledge to raise awareness of Mental Health. Let's pledge to speak to others if we think they need a listening ear.
Be there for others, be there to listen and advise and be a support for others.
Speak up if you have a problem you do not know how to deal with alone. Don't think about what others might say. Your mental health and mental peace are much more important than what others might think.
If you do not want to go to the psychologist or psychiatrist, then go to a counselor, a friend who might be able to help. Talk, keep in contact with your family. Talk to friends, find positivity, and do stuff that makes you happy, a hobby you might not have done before.
But if it is serious, then go to a person qualified to help you. Mental health is not something that should be taken lightly. It is your mind. It is your consciousness. You will not be able to function properly without these things working properly, you might not see the disorders related to your mind, but that doesn't make them any less important.
We need to remove this stigma around mental health. It can only be removed by talking about it. Talk and spread the word because the more you talk about it, the more it becomes normal. Talk to anyone and everyone about it. Talk about anxiety and depression, talk about Dysthymia, talk about suicidal thoughts. Talk about the different kinds of insomnia and mood disorders. Talk as much as you can.
I am a psychology student in my second year of graduation. I have trouble in sleeping, and I have insecurities. There was a time in my life when I had cut myself off from all my friends, and today I try every day not to bolt out running at the first sign of trouble because I might have avoidant behaviour. Every day is a fight, but I have friends who listen and cheer me up, tell me whenever I am wrong and give advice when I need it.

One of the reasons I choose psychology is because I wanted to help people, and this article is just one step along a long road. So do your part. Talk and spread awareness on Mental Health, and talk about your own problems.
