Bhairav Jayanti is observed on the eight lunar day in the Krishna Paksha during the month of Kartik or Margashirsha.
Kalbhairav is the fearsome and wrathful manifestation of Lord Shiva who is worshipped for obtaining success, wealth, health and removal of hindrances. A devotee is also said to be freed from the fear of death on celebrating Kalbhairav Jayanti.
It is believed that during a heated argument between the Trimurti about superiority, lord Shiva felt slightly insulted by one of Lord Brahma's remarks. At this moment, Kalbhairav
appeared from Lord Shiva's forehead and cut off one of Lord Brahma's five heads. The severed head stuck to Kalbhairav's left hand and He had to wander around the world as a
naked beggar using the slain skull as a begging bowl. Kalbhairav's sin of hurting the most learner Brahmin, Lord Brahma, was expiated when He reached the holy city of Varanasi.
Kalbhairav Jayanti is celebrated by observing a night long vigil. Stories about Kalbhairav, Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati are narrated. Offerings such as flowers, sweets and curd are made. Since dog is the animal vehicle of Kalbhairav, offerings such as curd, milk, sweets
and other foods are made to dogs as well. The day is celebrated with great zeal and zest in Varanasi and Vaishno Devi hills too.
This Kalbhairav Jayanti, let's all pray to Lord Kalbhairav to bless us with the strength to work towards leading a prosperous and successful life.
