The story behind Ganesh Chaturthi is that the Elephant God was on his way back home in Mount Kailash after his big birthday feast when the Moon God, Chandra, laughed at him when his "stomach broke" and he tied a snake around it like a belt.

This incident infuriated Lord Ganesha and he cursed Chandra to lose his beauty for half the lunar month (the phases of the moon).

It is also considered inauspicious to see the moon on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, i.e., Bhadrapada Shukla Chauti or the fourth day of the waning phase of the lunar month.
The repercussions of viewing the moon on this day can be wrongful allegations/accusations.

However, there is a way to get rid of this curse if you accidentally happen to see the moon on that day. The story of the Shyamantaka Jewel is the cure and also explains how seeing the moon on the specific day affected Lord Krishna.

Shyamantaka Mani story

Satrajit, a nobleman from Dwarka, is a devotee of the Sun God, Surya.

Pleased with his devotion, Surya gives Satrajit the Shyamantaka Mani, with a power of producing 8 units of gold per day, as a gift. This makes Satrajit a very rich man and also a selfish man.
Krishna asks him to share his gift with the people of Dwarka, but Satrajit refuses.

A few days later, Satrajit's brother Prasena wears the gem as a necklace and goes hunting. Unfortunately, he is killed by a lion, and it takes away the glowing gem.
Jambavan, the king of bears, also saw the glowing gem and killed the lion to gift the gem to his son.

When Prasena does not return to Dwarka, the people wonder what happened to him and Satrajit suspects that Krishna had killed his brother for the gem.
To prove his innocence, Krishna goes to the forest with a search team.
Upon finding the lion's tracks near Prasena's body, Krishna follows it to find the dead lion and bear's tracks.

Following the bear's tracks, Krishna reaches Jambavan's cave.
Jambavan's son gets scared of seeing Krishna and starts crying. This cry alerts Jambavan, who attacks Krishna by thinking he was here to harm his child.

The battle between the two went on for 28 days before Jambavan realizes that Krishna is actually Lord Vishnu's avatar and surrenders to him.

Finally, Jambavan gives the Shyamantaka Mani and his daughter, Jambavati's hand in marriage to Krishna, which Krishna accepts.
