It was the 3rd day of December, 1971 when a struggle ensued in East Pakistan for independence from the nation of Pakistan, and as a result a war was declared between India and Pakistan.

"You surrendered or We wipe you out," was what India's Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw had said on 3rd of December. The war went on for the next 13 days, and exactly on 16th December, the Indian Army emerged victorious and the Pakistani Army was compelled to surrender, eventually liberating Bangladesh from Pakistan. This surrender of Pakistan Army was the largest military surrender observed after the second World War. This campaign, undertaken by the Indian Army, has been recognized as one of the fastest and shortest military campaigns of the world, and as a consequence, a new country was formed.

This decisive and historic victory of India marked a glorious moment not only for the Indian Army but for the entire nation. Ever since then, this day has been celebrated as the 'Vijay Diwas' in India as well as in Bangladesh.

16th December, 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the Indo-Pak War of 1971, and the whole nation will be celebrating the 'Swarnim Vijay Varsh' from 16th of December. On this day the honorable Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi, visited the National War Memorial (NWM) in Delhi and lit up the 'Swarnim Vijay Mashaal' from the eternal flame on the occasion.

Four Victory Flames were lit up which would be carried all around the nation, including the villages and native places of the 1971 war veterans and martyrs who were awarded with the Param Vir Chakra and the Mahavir Chakra. Various commemorative events have been planned all over India to honor and pay homage to the soldiers, without whom the victory would have been incomplete.
