“A river is more than an amenity, it is a treasure.”
-Oliver Wendell HolmesAbout 71% of Earth’s surface is taken up by water. However, rivers amount to only 0.0002% of the water bodies.
Rivers are one of the major sources of potable water for many people around the world. It is disheartening to see our rivers dry up and it is even worse that we have turned them into dumpyards!
As human beings, it is our responsibility to protect and conserve such wonderful natural resources that we have been gifted. Let’s take due care of them!
The objective behind celebrating world rivers' day is the same too!
Mark Angelo, a renowned river advocate proposed to observe World Rivers’ Day after the United Nations launched the Water for Life Decade in 2005. Since then World Rivers’ Day is observed on the fourth Sunday of September every year to celebrate the water-bodies. The basic objective behind observing this day is to highlight the essence and importance of rivers and to spread awareness amongst the public. People from about 70 countries come together to celebrate this day.
How to celebrate this day?
Considering the fact that we are facing a pandemic and we need to follow social distancing to get rid of it, this year, we can celebrate World Rivers’ Day by conducting virtual programs to create awareness amongst the public about the value of rivers and the importance of cleaning them up. Though we may not be able to clean the rivers this year due to the existing circumstances, such small efforts of spreading awareness will definitely pay off in the long run!
Oh! One more thing, just don’t forget to close the tap when you are not using it!
Save water! Save rivers! Save lives!
Happy Rivers’ Day!
