Now, why do we out of all fruits celebrate the coconut day?
Well, the APCC has recognised coconut as a neglected blessing. Coconut is a highly versatile fruit found in the tropical and equatorial zone of the Earth, especially in South Asian, African, South American and Pacific-sharing countries that need moist, sandy, well-drained soil. It flourishes well in the saline-rich coastal regions. The Palm Coconut can reach more than 100 feet in height with the life span of about 75 to 100 years. Being a tropical fruit from Arecaceae, the palm tree family, coconut is the only living species of the genus Cocos.
APCC under the aegis of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP) observes World Coconut Day on 2nd September whereas the National Coconut Day is celebrated on full moon day of the month of Shravan that falls nearly on July or August and is celebrated by the fishing communities of Maharashtra and Konkani coastal areas as NāraLi pournima.
World Coconut Day is an occasion to interpret policies and express the plan of action in this sector. It is celebrated by the whole world by raising awareness about the health and commercial benefits of Coconut. In India, World Coconut Day is celebrated by the Coconut Development Board of India (est. 12th January 1981).
