“No woman has got to be a victim of physical abuse. Women need to desire they're not alone.”
- Salma Hayek

On 17 December 1999, the United Nations passed a resolution to observe 25th November of every year as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Why 25th November?

On 25th November of the year 1960, 3 of the 4 Mirabal sisters were assassinated. The Mirabal sisters opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo and most of the historians believe that the assassination was executed on the orders of Trujillo.

As a move to mark a day to fight against violence and crimes against women and raise awareness, the UN chose the date on which women who chose to voice out their opinions were killed.

Why is observing this day important?

In the current day scenario, where the world seems to have become numb to the violence and crimes against women, it is vital to stand tall and fight against it. It is important to create awareness against any sort of violence based on gender and that is what this day is rightly observed for.

Angelina Jolie’s these words exactly express why this day is important-

"There may be a global epidemic of violence against women — both within conflict zones and within societies asleep — and it's still treated as a lesser crime and lower priority."

Do You Know??

1 in 3 women and girls experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, most often by an intimate partner.
Emerging data shows an increase in calls to domestic violence helplines in many countries since the outbreak of COVID-19.
Only 52% of girls married or during a union freely make their own decisions about sexual relations, contraceptive use and health care.
71% of all human trafficking victims worldwide are women and girls, and 3 out of 4 of these women and girls are sexually exploited.

What's this year's theme?

Starting with "Orange The Neighborhood" in the initial years, the UN has gradually taken steps towards "Orange The World" recently. This year's theme is "Orange The World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!"

How can you participate?

Make a difference by initiating conversations about gender-based violence and raise your voice against it! You can also use the following hashtags: #orangetheworld #generationequality #spreadtheword

"I firmly believe today that the sole thanks to stop violence against women is to talk out and refuse to be silenced."
-Zainab Salbi

“There is one universal truth, applicable to all or any countries, cultures and communities: violence against women isn't acceptable, never excusable, never tolerable.”
-Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Create awareness.
Raise your voice.
Stand by what is right.
Spread peace.
Be the change.
Make a difference.
