“Peace begins where expectations end.” — Sri Chinmoy.
In this world of contradicting faith and beliefs, scores and millions of us live together, unified as humans in this world of hatred, war, violence, and disharmony. Peace, deep down, is something we all crave and seek to find but seldom do.
In a world where terrorist attacks, communal riots, racist, and casteist killings, inhumane crimes like rape, unlawful public lynching, and exploitation instigated due to influence and misuse of power, are found in abundance, peace has been associated more with hypothesis than with practical implementation. World peace has for long been the sole objective of several organizations across the world.
With the incessant conflict in views and ideology among world leaders and representatives and age-old rivalry, cold war among neighbouring nations, like the instances of India and Pakistan, or Israel and Palestine, border tensions, airstrikes, uncalled-for wars, military coups, terrorist invasions etc., are common occurrences. These events not only affect the peaceful setting of civilisation but also often lead to greater, prolonged issues that can leave a lasting impact on humans, in the most traumatic fashion possible. From an economic point of view, one can never forget the 9/11 attacks on the 11th of September 2001, which paved the way for the global recession after the World Trade Centre was devastated as an aftermath of the attacks. The atomic bomb, which was detonated by the American troops in the final year of the Second World War (1945) in two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, cause suffering to the people there, even though more than half a century has passed since the bombing, succeeding in causing medical distress, crippling thousands, and leaving their future generations to suffer the backlash.
The United Nations, an organisation formed with the association of international governments, aiming to maintain and preserve international security and peace, has been in existence since its inception in 1945, post the Second World War. The organisation has often acted as a catalyst to facilitate and encourage the resolution of matters seeking international intervention and attention through dialogue. With regular meets, and different assemblies with specific agendas, like the United Nations General Assembly, the International Court of Justice, and the Security Council, regular debates, bilateral, and multilateral talks take place, where one representative from each nation can put forth their views on a given agenda. Diplomatic talks and arguments, thus, help the nations to work together for the sake of global citizens and humanity, without sparking off unnecessary trepidation caused as an aftermath of war. The United Nations Human Rights Council in close association with UNICEF, work in favour of the citizens across the world, hoping to protect children and anyone else who may be vulnerable to crimes and other unfavourable situations. For example, owing to never-ending conflict among Israel and Palestine, religious battles amongst Jews and Muslims have always been incessant, ignited further by the influence of Hamas along the Gaza strip. Although both the neighbours have suffered terribly over the decades, this has caused the Palestinians, in particular, great distress. The United Nations have hosted several talks and debates under the UNGA-DISEC to sort out the differences but to no avail. On the other hand, the Human Rights Assembly of the United Nations have been trying to provide better living conditions for the Palestinian refugees who have been living in severe conditions, often going without income and food. All in all, the organisation has been looking to celebrate and maintain peace with the world and devising ways in which hypotheses can be implemented in reality. The recognition of the International Day of Peace on the 21st of September each year is considered to be an essential step towards celebrating peace on each day of every year, sometime in the future.
The International Day of Peace or World Peace Day, as it is often referred to, was first observed in the year 1981. Aiming to commemorate a temporary ceasefire during a war for humanitarian aid, or to celebrate a state of peace and normalcy in nations prone to security threats and disharmony, this day is a sanctioned holiday in several places across the world, especially in member nations of the UN. The day is inaugurated by the ceremonial ringing of the Peace Bell at the UN Headquarters in New York City, United States of America. The purpose of celebrating this day is to celebrate the essence of harmony and peace, and to celebrate the key that ties all of humanity together, irrespective of the differences and diversity. The General Assembly of the United Nations has declared 21st of September as a day of total peace and lack of any kinds of war or retaliation. This day calls for 24 hours of absolute peace, non-violence, and ceasefire, even in the worst war zones.
While many find this initiative by the UN an impractical, and solely hypothetically relevant concept, it’s a step towards acceptance; acceptance of peace instead of war, the acceptance of unity in diversity instead of clashes and differences. The one step that would someday, hopefully pave the way to prove the statement, Vasudhaiva Kutumbhakam; the World is one family.
World Peace is a faraway dream. It’s the ardent desire and wish of all those who have suffered personal losses or deep, traumatic anguish. We are humans who crave peace, who condemn war, and seek harmony. This International Day of Peace, let’s begin celebrating with ourselves by seeking out those who we have had a clash or fallout with recently. Let us say the unsaid words, give expression to those unvoiced feelings, and set to seek out together, what is coveted by the world, PEACE. Let us relieve our minds of thoughts that have burdened us, welcoming Inner peace of mind. Let us set out on this journey together, to live unified, obliterating differences.
In this pandemic situation especially, a lot of us have lost loved ones. A lot of us have been through terrible anguish and trauma, physical or emotional. Let’s pledge on this International Day of Peace to not let go of one another, to have each other’s back, and to share love and peace. Let religion, caste, gender, ideology not make a difference. Let our human hearts touch.
P- Pledge today to live today, in this world,
E- Extending a hand of friendship to those who seek.
A- Acting human, obliterating violence.
C- Caring for others and staying united. And to
E- Expect to establish a better world someday, a world where PEACE is a reality, and not a dream.#ind_legion
