Celebrated every year on 14th of September, Hindi Diwas commemorates the day when Hindi was selected as the official language of India. This day is celebrated to popularize and promote the language. It also unites every Indian to their common roots and origin.
On September 14, 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted Hindi
as the official language of the newly formed nation.
The first Hindi Diwas was celebrated in 1953.Some rare facts about Hindi
Hindi is the fourth most spoken language in the world (over 500 million speakers) after English, Spanish and Mandarin.
Hindi has been used as a literary language since the twelfth century.
English has adopted many Hindi words. For example, avatar, bandanna, bungalow, dinghy, guru, jungle, khaki, karma, loot, mantra, nirvana, punch, pyjamas, sorbet, cheetah, shampoo, thug, typhoon and yoga.
Each letter of the Hindi alphabet has its own distinct sound. Hindi words are pronounced exactly as they are written, making the language easy to learn.
George Bush had allocated a budget of $114 million to the teaching of Hindi as a part of the curriculum from the kindergarten to the graduate level, considering the importance of Hindi as a common native language of Indian Americans during his tenure.
Hindi has more letters than English, containing 11 vowels and 33 consonants.
The word 'Hindi' is derived from the Persian word 'Hind' meaning the 'land of Indus River'.
Let us come together on this auspicious day to take pride in our official and oldest language. Hindi, the 'language of unity', is our heritage and we must cherish it.
