Mahanavami is the fourth day of Durga Puja and the ninth day of Navratri festival. Mahanavami is made of two words, derived from Sanskrit. ‘Maha’ means grand and
‘Navami’ means ninth.

It is believed to be the last day of battle between goddess Durga and demon Mahishasura. On Maha Navami, Durga Maa made her final strike on Mahishasura which paved the way for her ultimate win. The following morning, on Vijayadashami, she finally triumphed once and for all over the evil demon.

On this day specifically, Maa Durga is known as Mahisasuramardhini - which means the slayer of the buffalo demon or mahishasura.

The rituals of the day start with a holy bath or ‘Mahasnan’ followed by many prayers to the Goddess. One of the significant rituals includes Shodhasopachar puja.
