"What are you going to do in the end of the year recess?" Maud asked me as she poured a mountain of hagelslag over a bread stuffed with nutella.

"I'm going to my mom's in the Christmas week, then I don't know." I replied with my forehead still glued to my kitchen table.

"Is your hangover that bad? I didn't remember you being so weak to drink." She spoke to me, completely ignoring my answer to her question.

"It's medication I'm taking." I said, closing my eyes and sighing.

"Ah yes, I see. Well, I think I'm going to have a new year's party at home, do you want to go?"

"I think so, who are you going to invite?"

"The usual people, some colleagues at work... I don't think I know any more people than that. But there is space at home. We have the garden, where we can build a fire, if the night is good. And there are the rooms where everyone can sleep after getting wasted." She said laughing, already trying to convince me.

"Okay, you can count me in." I smiled against the wood of the table and straightened my back up, lifting my head.

"I'm going to take a shower, do you want to shower here too?"

"No, it's okay. I'll wait for you to take your shower and then we can go to my house, how about it? "

"Okay." I said because I wanted to stay with her for longer.

I got out of the shower and got dressed in my room. I put a thermal legging under my ripped jeans, a basic tank top and a sweatshirt. I found Maud in the living room, fiddling with her phone.

"I hope you don't mind it, but I invited everyone to lunch at my house."

"Please, it's your house!" I exclaimed, as if I could decide who can or cannot go to her house. "Let me just dry my hair, I'll be quick."

Maud's house wasn't exactly hers. She lived in a villa that belonged to her parents, but they were very old and when they reached a certain age, they decided that living there was no longer worth it and moved to their farm in a city far from ours. As a result, Maud lived in a huge house, alone.

As soon as we arrived she turned on the heaters and she, differently from me, liked to keep her house very warm. She put the temperature at 23ºC and soon I was sweating inside my clothes.

I took off my sweatshirt and headed to the couch in the TV room, turning on the device and opening the YouTube app on my phone. I put on a music video and mirrored it to appear on TV.

Lotte arrived while Maud was in the shower.

"Hi! You didn't even say goodbye to me yesterday!" She hugged me with a pout on her lips.

"You were busy when I left, I didn't want to interrupt," I said and she was blushing, looking away from mine. "What's going on, now you're shy?"

"No... It's just that we spent the night together again..."

"Let me know in advance when things are going to go bad again so I can run." I teased.

"I think it won't be like this, this time. I'm going to talk to Grietje today, but it's been a while since they broke up and it was she who broke up last time... also she's been seeing another guy for a little while now." She threw it all up on me.

"Okay," I said quietly, "I just don't know if I can be dragged into this drama again, right now."

"I know, but I don't think there will be any drama."

"I hope not, more for your sake than for mine, in my current state." I replied and held her hand as we headed to the TV room to watch the music video that was playing.

It didn't take long before everyone arrived and Maud and Evi went to the kitchen to prepare the frikandellen and bitterballen that we were going to eat pretending they were a decent and healthy lunch.

Those who didn't cook were scattered around the house and I saw Lotte go up the stairs to the upper floor with Grietje. Not wanting to wait for the outcome of that particular conversation, I headed out into the garden, touching some benches of the outside furniture to see if they were dry. I sat on the edge of a lounger, the furthest away from the house, and started my ritual, finally smoking my cigarette without being interrupted, as usually happens when I'm with them.

My body was heavy and I wanted more than anything to lie down, so I took the opportunity and rested my back on the length of the lounger. I stayed like that for a while, until I felt a hand on me, shaking my right shoulder.

"Hey babe. Come on, it's ready." It was Grietje crouching next to me so that her face was level with mine.

"Wow, I didn't even realize I slept." I replied, jumping a little.

"That's okay, the table is already set and we are starting to eat, but I thought it was unfair to start without you." She said sweetly.

"How are you?" I asked impulsively.

"I'm fine, did you know that Lotte wanted to talk to me?" She replied, understanding what I was talking about.

"Yes..."

"Everything is fine. I think I got tired of this crazy love triangle. I know he likes her and I know she likes him and I know I didn't like him enough to be between them anymore." She said with no trace of resentment in her voice.

"I'm happy for you." I said, hugging her shoulders from behind, as we headed into the house.

When we arrived at the table, Grietje sat next to Maud leaving the only seat available to me between Yoongi and Timo.

"Er... where do I sit?" I asked awkwardly.

"Right there between Timo and Yoongi" Tulip exclaimed bluntly.

"But isn't Debbie sitting here?"

"No, she didn't come with me today." Yoongi answered me, moving his chair away and giving me more space for me to sit.

Sitting next to him had advantages, that way he couldn't look at me as he normally did.

We stayed at the table talking for some time after eating, but gradually some of them got up towards the TV room and Timo suggested that we play some board game.

"Argh! No. That is the sign that I must go home." I said getting up from the table and saying goodbye.

"I think I'm going too." I heard Yoongi say, but I didn't stay in the room to see the end of this interaction.

I was turning on my bicycle's flashlight when I noticed him approaching me.

"Do you want a ride?" He said as he walked to me with his hands in his jacket's pockets.

"No, thanks, I came by bicycle." I replied without looking directly at him.

"Tha'ts not a problem, we can put it in my car's rack, it's parked outside."

"Thanks, but you don't have to."

I got on my bike and cycled towards the gate, leaving without saying goodbye. I knew he was still watching me as I turned left when I reached the street.
