Emmett's POV
I put a team of trackers together full of wolves that were trained under my rule and trusted. I had them smell Sam's blood-stained clothes once I started thinking clearly. I'm glad I didn't have time to throw them out yet. We followed the scent all day but I had no idea where he was going. It wasn't the way to his little place he made his home or anywhere he had been the week we were watching him. It made me realize I knew nothing about him at all.
And yet, I miss him so much, my wolf longed for his warmth, his scent, and still wouldn't talk to me. I couldn't even shift because he won't come out like a stubborn asshole. It was too quick in my head, and it was driving me crazy. Maybe it was a good thing I couldn't let my wolf take over. I feared by this point I would only lay down and whine with my ears pressed against my head and curled into myself like a newborn if I did.
"Alpha," Zack walked over to me and bowed his head slightly in respect. He was in charge of the tracking team now that Luke was fired from the pack job. He was young with jet black hair that matched his smaller wolf and still new to all the responsibilities for the job at hand but I trusted him more than anyone that was trained under my father right now.
"Yes?" I asked, still looking around the street in hopes just Sam would walk out of nowhere like magic.
"I'm sorry but the trail ends here. We had been here for over an hour trying to pick it up again but he must have gotten into a vehicle somewhere around here. Plus all this fog and mist the cool night's air brought isn't helping at all. I'm so sorry alpha." He said with his head still low. "The men are scattered from here looking but he could be anywhere by now."
I looked down. Maybe he lifted the city already. That's what I would do in his shoes. I've been trying to put myself in his shoes all day. What would I do if this happened to me and I was just as confused as he was?
What if the hunter's found him already?
I sat down on a chair in an abandoned sitting area and put my head in my hands to think. This was a more poor part of the city, around us was a small restaurant, a clothing store, and a-
I sat up slightly, suddenly remembering how Sam didn't have on shoes or a coat or even money to get in a vehicle when he ran out. It was damp and cold outside, not to me because my wolf always keeps my blood warm, but cold to the humans. And his scent is stronger here which means he was here longer than anywhere else. I got up and walked into the clothing store with Mason not far behind me like he normally was unless he was on patrol.
After taking that blow from Sam this morning I told Brian to stay home with Viv who wouldn't let him leave her side.
"I swear, I had the money right here! How could it be gone?" A woman looked through her bag in a panic as we walked in.
This was the right place, I knew it. My sneaking mate. I shook my head and smiled to myself. Maybe I did know him better than I thought.
"I'm sorry ma'am. If you don't have the money I'll have to ask you to return these," the younger man behind the counter told her, looking apologetic as the woman held onto her crying baby.
"Please. I swear. Someone must have taken my wallet. I- I need those clothes for my kids. It's getting colder out-"
"Excuse me. I'll pay for it and I would like to see your cameras as well sir," I said, pulling out three hundred bills and putting them on the counter in front of them.
"I can't take that. I'm so sorry sir," the lady looked ready to cry as the child pulled her long brown hair. She looked completely exhausted, more than I did.
In a pack, everyone helped raise the pups but I've learned over the years that it's not the same for humans. They don't live as tightly together as we all did. It must be really hard and exhausting for a human to do it all on their own. I couldn't help but feel sympathy for them, especially one with a crying child.
"It's no trouble at all," I smiled as nicely as I could to her. "Here take this as well. I'm sure I know what happened to your money and I take full responsibility for it. Please take this and have a wonderful day." I smiled and handed her a few more hundreds that will hopefully replace her wallet and all the money she had in it. I knew damn well Sam was a good pickpocket and he took her money. She thanked me at least 30 times before taking her stuff and left as I had Zack help her with her bags since she was still trying to calm the baby and herself down.
"Sir I can't just let you-," the man started as I laid down another hundred and he looked up at me in shock.
"I won't tell if you won't," I told him with a smile.
He looked around and shoved the money in his pocket before he typed something on the computer and then turned it to me. Money worked just about every time with humans but again, they didn't have a pack to help them with money all the time either so I guess I could understand.
"May I?" I asked pointing to the mice and he handed it over as I started to click on different camera views to rewind the footage.
It took a moment but it wasn't long before I found my Sam. There he was at least. I couldn't help but exhale in relief to see him still safe.
He walked in looking cold and shaking, wearing my clothes still and holding himself. He looked around for a moment hidden from the view of the man behind the counter before throwing on a long sleeve shirt trying to get warm. Sneaking around again he looked at some shoes, throwing a pair on then grabbing the women's wallet out of her bag while she wasn't looking. The man behind the counter didn't even know he was in the store that whole time.
"I'm gonna have to call the police," the man said as he watched Sam steal things with me.
"Just ring everything up that was taken and I'll pay for it in full, with another hundred for you of course," I said taking out even more money and paying the man but I didn't even look at him as I watched Sam quickly leave after taking the money from the woman's wallet and hiding it in the shelves. "Do you have an outside camera?"
"Sure. Hold on." He took the mice from me and clicked on a few things to bring up the outside cameras as I looked for Sam walking out.
He walked out and waved down a cab. I stopped the video and looked for the number as Mason walked over to me.
"Any luck?" He asked as the man behind the counter stepped back a little. It was a common reaction when people first saw Mason.
"He was here, then got into a cab but the video is too blurry. I can't read what the number of it is," I told him as calmly as I could. Truthfully, I wanted nothing more than to throw the damn screen through the window with how pissed off I was.
"Who are you people? Is that kid in some kind of trouble? Should I... be worried?" The man asked us, looking a little scared now.
"Everything is fine sir," Mason said, taking the lead as I looked around the cameras for another clear view of the cab number. "The boy is our friend and this is just a really intense game of hide-and-seek." He smiled as I looked over at him in the corner of my eye, shaking my head. I guess he wasn't wrong, in a way.
I gave the man a little more money for the help and called the cab company but of course, they were no help over the phone. Thankfully, I knew someone from our pack there that will help me once I get there. At least for now, I knew he was safe up until he got into the cab. I just hoped he is still safe.
It just seemed like whenever I got closer to him, he'd end up getting farther away as we drove over to the cab station to find out who picked him up and where they dropped him off. I was so close, only an hour behind him and now we had to go back to the other side of the city away from where Sam was last seen to find more information. I couldn't help feeling more frustrated.

Emmett is looking so hard for Sam. It's really touching to me. He had doubts he didn't know Sam at all but he does know Sam a little.
