Sam's POV

I couldn't look away from Baxter's deep red eyes but at the same time everything in me told me to stop looking into them, to look down and with much effort, I finally did.

"L- listen, he just used me as bait and then took me to his room from some kind of pity guilt thing. I left the city because of him so i- if you're going to tell him I'm here then fine but I'll... I'll run before Steven walks out of that bathroom and I have a feeling you won't leave him here alone to chase after me."

He sat back with a small smile growing on his lips as his eyes turned back to normal. "Smart boy about that last part. But no, I have no desire to tell that prick anything. I'm not part of his pack. I'm Beta to the Crescent Moon's alpha so looks like it's your lucky day Sam. Like I told you before I've heard much about you, so I'll help you hide from Emmett if you want but you'll have to help me and my mate with something in return," he smiled even bigger as I could see the look in his eyes like he just won something.

"I'm guessing that would be Steven then?" I asked, remembering what Emmett told me about mates before. One person they would love and protect until death. A strong bond with each other and remembering how the two of them shouldn't stop touching each other in some way was a sure guess.

"You're a fast learner. Don't worry though, Steven knows who I am and how he is my mate already. I'm not hiding from him in any way. I moved both him and Lexi into a house I just bought for them three days ago but it seems Lexi is having a hard time adjusting to her new home. I don't blame her though, with the past she had but I don't want her to fear her new home either."

"How do I know I can trust you? I've already made a deal with one of your kind and they tried to kill me then I was used by another. I don't trust wolves. Maybe Lexi has a good reason for being uncomfortable and Steven is just blinded by this so-called 'love' you call mates," I hissed at him, not ready to make a deal with another wolf so soon.

He smiled at me with amusement. "I guess you'll just have to take a leap of faith Sam. I love Steven with every bone in my body and even though Lexi doesn't know me yet, I love her like my own sister too. I just want what's best for them both."

"Do you really care for them?"

He leaned forward with his elbows now on the table and looked me dead in the eyes. "Yes, I do. He is my mate whether you believe it or not. He is mine until my death and I will protect both him and Lexi with this life until then. Lexi is to be homeschooled and get herself the education she deserves, even with her handicap which I have already professionally prepared for and so will Steven if he so chooses under the safety of my pack. They are safe. They have hot meals three times a day or whenever they would like and a really nice house to live in where they are sheltered from the cold of the winter and the heat of summer. I will do everything I can to make him happy and I want Lexi to feel the same."

I stared hard into his eyes looking for any sign of a lie, the smallest hint that made my gut tell me not to trust his words but I couldn't find one. He was serious about taking care of them as best as he could. He just wants Lexi to feel as comfortable as Steven does. But one thing still bothered me.

"If that was true then why were you paying him for sex like he was some-,"

"You think I liked doing that? First off, he's my mate, it's only natural to feel this overwhelming urge to... breed with what is mine, I guess you could say, and it only gets worse until we complete the mating process with me marking him. I've been stopping by there for over a month now to give him money to make sure they had food or a place to sleep if it rained. You just... caught us at a bad time. I had to hurry and leave because technically, I'm not supposed to be over there. It's trespassing on another pack's territory which gives them the right to kill me if I get caught without permission. You see Sam, I've been risking my life to make sure Steven and Lexi were safe and had food to eat and a roof over their heads when they needed one even before I moved them into that house."

I looked up to see Steven walking back over to the table again. "Fine. I'll do it for Lexi but if I feel her life is in danger once, I'll tell Steven and get her out of there," I told him now out of time to think it all over. If anything, at least I'll be able to protect Lexi if something goes wrong.

After lunch, we got back into the SUV and sat there for a few minutes until Baxter broke the silence. "Listen, baby boy," he started to say to Steven, who jumped around with a red face. "Sam has agreed to help us try to make Lexi feel a little more comfortable in the new house. He will be staying with us as well to help. If that's okay with you of course?"

"What? Did you tell him about... us?" He asked low, but I could still hear him since we were in a closed SUV.

Baxter looked at him a little disappointed in his reaction. "I did. What's wrong? Are you-,"

"I knew before he said anything that you two were together," I interrupted quickly. "I mean I did see you too together in the alley that one day if you really need a reminder of that. It's fine. As long as you are happy and both you and Lexi are safe then that should be all that matters. Right?"

He looked at me and then back at Baxter again. "He really does make me happy Sam, and Lexi is safe at the house with us too. I just thought about how sick she got last winter, I just couldn't let her suffer in the cold again. This was the best choice for her but she doesn't leave her room when Baxter is there and she is always so nervous and tense around the house. She won't show me why or how to fix it. You know I would never do anything to put her in danger Sam. I- I love Baxter."

Baxter looked at him with wide eyes for a moment before smiling bigger than ever. "My little mate, you just made me so happy," he said as he pulled Steven closer to kiss him deeply before pulling back and resting his forehead against his. "I love you too baby boy."

I couldn't help but smile at their display of affection towards each other. I could clearly see Baxter cared for Steven and Steven cared for him too. They did look cute together. Baxter looked so big and intimidating, but he had a soft side to him and Steven was so small and innocent looking.

But watching them like this made me think of Emmett for some odd reason. I wished I could be that close to him again but clearly, I wasn't his mate which made part of me feel so broken and sad. But then the other part of me felt like running as far as I could in the other direction because of what he did.

It didn't take us long to get to the house from where we were. It was nice looking, surrounded by trees. By this point, it was getting dark out but it didn't hit me until I stepped out of the SUV. I stopped completely as the fresh air hit my nose and the faint sounds of crickets hit my ears. This feeling washed over me so fast and my whole body felt restless all of a sudden but I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. It was just so calming and peaceful out here that I completely forgot what I was doing here and who I was with.

"Sam?" I heard Baxter ask, startling me back into reality and opening my eyes again. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah. I've never... I don't know. I've never felt so... calm before. Living in the city for as long as I could remember. This is the first time it's been so quiet and the smell of the air is just so beautiful and cool. I feel like going for a walk or maybe a run," I told him truthfully.

"Really?" He asked with a smile before looking over into the woods where I was looking. "Seems like you have more in common with a wolf than you thought. I feel the same way when I come here too, that's why I bought this house. But time for that later Sam. Let's head inside. You can sleep in the basement. Tomorrow I'll go and get you whatever you need for the room down there."

With that, I tore my eyes away from the trees and followed him and Steven into the house.
